HL2 performance (vs Doom3), and your specs

Thread Starter
So, I'm going to be getting an alienware laptop soon, but was waiting to hear the results of the ATI/nVidia comparisons. How well does HL2 run on your machine, and are our ATI friends really beating out the nVidia as predicted?

I run Half Life 2 at 1125 X Whatever at all high settings and I am running at about 45fps or so...
There was an interview in the Dec. issue of PC Gamer with someone from Valve who said that ATI cards score roughly a 20% performance increase compared to nvidia cards in Half-Life 2.

I am running hl2 at 1680x something...it plays good. Doom is the same way.
i was running hl2 at 1680 by 150, than i lowerd the reso to 1280 by 800 and turned everything up, runs fine

The game still looks beautiful omg omg omg omg omg omg omg

and doom3 has nothing on hl2.

Currently playing it at 800x600 on high, also tried 1024x768 which was also pretty decent. I'm relieved that it runs well on my ATI 9600 since most of you guys have a 9700.

Seems to me that HL2 has lower video requirements but it looks so much better than Doom 3. That's magic.

Running 1680 x 1050 everything High, runs grand except for when there's a lot of water when the frame rate drops but its still playable. IMHO I don't think it looks better then Doom 3 the problem with Doom 3 is that its so dark, it'll be interesting when we see the engine used in something else....

In saying that Source doesn't seem so resource hungry.... My one problem with HL2 is that bloody steam, god damn it.
Im running the same as corpheus.
And im around 45fps goes to 38 with alot of fire.

Maybe beacuse doom3 was dark but i think HL2 graphics look better. But who cares they got gr8 looks and its not resource hungry!
I havent had any problems with steam, althought i thinks its dumb that if you buy it from a shop you need to use steam.

But heck I got it for free lol and i was clever lol. I notice steam gets stuck downloading even if it said 100% u restart steam yur at 10% lol!

I get 70 FPS on my current desktop
3ghz 2 gig ram, Geforce 6800 Ultra AGP. Damn stuttering.
Wonder if I will get double FPS on the new rig.
Will install on laptop sometime in next couple days (flying cross country)
Hope I can get offline to work.

Looks like a glock 19. . .

or maybe a 23
Two glock 23's. I traded my 23 in for the ultra compact .40 (don't remember model number). I carried a Glock 22 and Sig Sauer 220 for duty back in the day. My first pistol was a S+W 3413 (think that is correct), a pussy 9 MM. How pathetic that was.

HL2 gameplay wise is far superior, it has no competition.
HL2 has far superior graphics than doom 3
Doom 3 does however run shitier than HL2 while looking worse.

HL2 runs fine on my compy, doom 3 runs alright after tweaking it at medium.

I couldn't agree more that HL2 smokes Doom3 (which is a delicious screamfest more petrifying than any book or movie ever) and that it runs better too. All that crap about it doing better on ATI cards is just that. I run both maxed out with the old Nvidia 5950 (ol' reliable) and while each is invariably smooth, HL2 runs like a cartoon. What a game... Its changed everything

I just wish some game would add strippers like Duke Nukem had. And how about hot chicks with clothes you can shoot off like in SIN. The ultimate would be Craig pole dancing.
