Calling Attention to Transmeta

I haven't seen a lot of laptops offering Transmeta (www.transmeta.com) Crusoe processors. Is it because they're an unknown? With Crusoe, a laptop can be 3.6 pounds with a CD-RW/DVD drive. It goes up to 933 MHz, and considering some of the Acer laptops/tablets are around the same speed, why is it that they remain unnoticed?

I admit their progress is slow, but their ideas are great!

I'm not sure why I'm posting this thread, but maybe if more people are interested in Transmeta, the more possibility that companies will try to accomodate this newfound interest.

I also think this could be the wrong place to start this thread, as Transmeta focuses on lightweight, and Sager-bound don't seem to care about weight.

A start's a start. Go Transmeta, go!

they would really only (and are) gaining popularity in the super thin and light crowd. the way that transmeta crusoe's get such great battery life is by continually shifting processor power up and down in response to the current needs. my friend has a fujitsu p1000 ultra-tiny with a crusoe 800 in it. it is a decent device but for high cpu like rendering or audio, it quickly shows that it's power is not adequate.

on the other hand, i'd love to have one of these 3-4 lb things with two batteries and get 14hrs out of it for taking around rather than porting the 8886 but i can't justify it really.

Crusoe processors are self-cooling...I think that's the coolest part. If you haven't heard of the OQO (www.oqo.com) then check them out. If you have heard of them, do you know if they're even being manufactured?
i've seen that oqo site before.. like you, i don't know if they're being manufactured, and i pretty much doubt it. making a snappy flash website for vaporware seems to be the easiest way to draw attentiont from net folk, but i wonder if investors ever look at this??

anyway, the first thing that struck me about this was that on its own it would really go beyond being rather limited in useful human interface.. sure i suppose one could plug in some kind of keyboard (hopefully a small one like for a PDA) but then you're carrying multiple boxes again. one could use it as a PDA, but then it seems to be tremendous overkill (says the person typing on the 8886 bohemoth "laptop") .. one could use it as an "Active" data/system transfer or identity module (i think the coolest idea) but then you'd better hope the other side (your friend's house, work) has a matching system that will allow you to run your machine through it.

that said, wouldn't it be cool if you could go to the mall or airport or whatnot and there was a full stable of "empty" ""machines"" (monitor, keyboard, mouse) that you could pay to pop in your oqo and you suddenly have your whole computer there with you - not in laptop format but in the fullness of our typical 'desktop' paradigm (or if you're in the star trek universe, you could use it for free.)

that was chatty..

sure was. Supposedly, sony will be manufacturing and each will cost $1000. I'd rather go with the Dell Axim.

I was looking at the P2000 from Fujitsu and I really wanted one; until I saw a sager. Then I was a bit ambivalent and eventually my dream laptop became a Sager 8880 (now 8886). Now I just want the 5660 'cuz it's cheaper and I don't really need TV tuner and an mp3 player anyway.

I had no reason to get Transmeta, I was just really excited by their ideas; I hope that Intel will buy em out or something so they can have more research put into it.

It would be sweet if more research went into them... could be sweet to maybe get a multiprocessor system with those... Get more speed. :-)

Dual Crusoe...sweet. Maybe then it'll gain some recognition...heck I don't know what's wrong with that idea. Although I bet there is something wrong with it, so anyone who wants to make me feel stupid again, go nuts.
No one should ever feel stupid... especially on these forums. :-) I bet the reason they don't do it is because there aren't enough OSs that take advantage of dual processors.... but with the advent of hyperthreading, I bet Microsoft will start moving towards that compatability and it might be a possibility for crusoe. :-)

You could probably fit 4 Crusoes in place of a P4 =P. Not like it'd be of any good to you...

Microsoft has already taken advantage of HT, such as in Outlook, and other companies as well, like Adobe with Photoshop.

Perhaps that could be a new transmeta approach...in place of each server processor you have you fit 4 Crusoes. I'll be sure to email them with such a silly suggestion sometime soon. (ooh, alliteration.)

4 processors :-) That would kick...

Oh yeah I was gonna email them with "such a silly suggestion sometime soon."

I'll do it later today.

Let us know if they respond... I bet they'll do it, make bunches of money off of it, and then say they thought it all up themselves :-)

I think I posted it in the wrong spot, but what I said was..

Just an idea, but is it possible to have a dual processor using Crusoe? Perhaps that could be the first dual processor in a laptop. There's probably something flawed with the idea, but I won't know until it's pointed out to me.
Way to sound unprofessional denkc.
