Linux on the Sager 9860 - Page 6

Congrats, make sure you patch the 2.6.10 kernel with the latest libata-dev patch when installing.
Good news... gentoo-dev-sources-2.6.10-r5 and -r6, just released, both support the Promise controller in the 9860.
still never worked for me fully (i'd always get I/O errors with any harddisk after a while)

but my current needs are sufficed with just using a virtual machine to boot gentoo *chuckle*

got tired of making coasters =)

tv tuner

Hi,

Can someone tell me the exact model of AVerMedia TV tuner that is supplied with the 9860? I have just been looking around to see if it's supported by linux.. Looks like some people have got the TV tuner working on older sagers.

Cheers
Glen

Here is the information I got from Sager on the subject of the TV Tuner. To the best of my knowledge: the TDA8275 tuner is not supported yet under linux.

Avermedia model no. M102
Philips silicon tuner TDA8275
Philips SAA7135 video decoder

(This information is care of Ted at Sager Tech Support

HI first of all I am a complete noob at linux, I have used RH 9.0 for a few months not on my notebook but my desktop. I have a Alienware 7700 notebook with PATA drive. I downloaded Fedora Core 3 and guess what since I have PATA drive no success. One thing I noticed is that most of these post seem to do with a kernal mod, can someone easly tell me where the mods go, can someone tell me if you boot from the iso's first then insert the Fedora Core DVD, basically I just need some more detailed help on what and how to get this started. Sorry for being such a noob.... you can PM me instead of spaming the thread...thanks in advance for your help....

Sound on the Alienware 7700/Sager 9680

Has anyone been successfull in getting sound to work under linux on this beast? I am running Suse 9.2 / Patched 2.6.10 Kernel / Alsa 1.0.8. It appeared that this unit was using the Realtek ALC 880 but after loading those modules the sound card still won't work. Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated.
Yes, some people have got the sound working by the sounds of things. see this wiki article.
http://www.linuxworld.net.nz/sager98...ek_HD_Audio%29

I think you will need a newer version of Alsa before it will work, the person that got the sound working had 1.0.8rc1 (development version).

wee, seems one of my hard drives just wasn't compatible for some reason cause the r works fine...

anyway, got gentoo running (the 2005.0 exthperimental livecd works just as well as the modded one in this thread) and everything seems fine...

my question is: has anyone been able to get above 1024x768 under X? and if so, how! it seems to totally ignore my modes line with only 1400x900 in it

hell, if i can even go higher i wouldn't mind

@Kidraver up above: you might have to wait a little for a release from fedora that supports it if you don't want to take the hard road and learn about kernel stuff

1. Download your favorite Gentoo LiveCD ISO. The one I'm using in this tutorial is

http://www.gentoo.mirrors.pair.com/r...-2004.3-r1.iso

2. Download the modified kernel from http://www.oeri.ath.cx/sager9860/gentoo .

3. Get WinISO (www.winiso.com) or mount the image under linux.

4. Open the ISO in WinISO.

5. Change to the ISOLINUX directory inside the ISO

6. Highlight the file "gentoo" (NOT GENTOO.IGZ) and press delete.

7. Drag and drop the "gentoo" modified kernel inside the ISOLINUX directory in the ISO.

8. File > Save

9. Burn with Nero or other burning software

Let me know how this works, guys...
The kernel and module version numbers don't match, resulting in an unusable CD. Did you check to see if the link you posted for the kernel was the right one?

Thanks.

marspoet, this worked for me:
http://mirror.tucdemonic.org/gentoo/...2005.0-rc5.iso
(or any respective gentoo mirror with the 2005.0 experimental with uses the newer patched version of 2.6.10 (-r5 if i remember correctly)

Coolness! I'll give it a try. Did the Yoper 2.2-pre last night and that worked pretty good in that it saw the drive and let me format the empty space for ext3/Reiser. Can't say I'm too very thrilled with it but I do acknowledge the Yoper folks do good work -- I'm just a Slackware baby at heart.

I did try the gentoo rc5, but it wasn't the experimental liveCD, so I'll give that a go: Gentoo has some appeal. Probably take me a year to get a fully successful stage1 done, but hey, that's a big part of the fun, eh?

Thanks again.

Hello, I'm a long-time reader, first time poster to this forum...was wondering if anyone has had any luck getting the Sager 9860 with the ATI X800 working under gentoo? Using the information provided in the previous posts to this thread (thank you all!) I've been able to get a gentoo system installed, however, I'm unable to get X to come up and the Xorg.log file indicates this generic error:
(EE) No devices detected
I ran lspci and notice the following:
[root@sith ~]# lspci | grep ATI
0000:01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc: Unkown device 5d4a

I've recompiled my kernel (2.6.10-gentoo-r6) a number of times thinking that maybe I'm screwing up on one of the selections in the config. Any thoughts or suggestions on this would be a great help. Thanks again!

I'm running the same config with the ~x86 unmasked in portage. However, no matter what I do I can't seem to get x running in 1680x1050 .. the best I can seem to do is 1400x1024 (I think that was it) and I had to do a lot of lame configuration changes to get that to happen.

Can you or someone else post their xorg.conf file? As of this writing I am running xorg-x11 6.8.2

Thanks

Here's my xorg.conf .

Thanks a million. I don't know why my config didn't work but probably has something to do with the fact that I didn't have more than 1 modline for 1680x1050 =]

I appreciate it.

FYI : I had problems running the 1.0.8 alsa-driver that comes down via gentoo's portage with the ~x86 keyword. If you aren't using ~x86 then 1.0.8rc1 is installed. This worked fine for me (rc1) but 1.0.8 official didn't.

This was with the 2.6.10-r6 kernel. r7 is available now, I'll check to see if that makes any difference.

** edit ** I am now running development-sources (2.6.11-r4 when I wrote this) with alsa-driver emerged with ~x86. I patched libata to get it to boot properly.

Does the 2.6.11 kernel work on the 9860?

Presumably, but I do remember seeing someone saying the Nvidia driver package didn't work with the new kernel yet. You could always get the source and build yourself a kernel and try it out -- if you know how to add a new kernel to lilo then you can safely play with new kernels to your tweakin'-little-hearts content.

Gotta say that PATA/SATA problem on the Promise has proven to be a royal pain in the arse, but then bleeding edge hardware tends to make one, well, bleed.

Happy kernel compiling.

Thanks Mars.
The whole current Gentoo install is a pain in the arse. I have wireless (802.11g) networking at home and have to trudge upstars to a wired outlet to get the install done. Even then it has take a couple of days. In contrast Fedora 3, Mandrake 10.1 and SUSE 9.2 I can have installed in about 2 - 3 hours, with wireless (ndiswrapper) running.
