Linux on the Sager 9860 - Page 4

HI there Guys!
I have sum good news.
I have been looking at a Local NZ Linux Distribution called Yoper Linux.
It can be found here at www.yoper.com.
I have sucessfully downloaded one of their latest Development relases which was able to detect my PATA drive and install a base Linux config, without KDE ect ect.
You can find it here at :

http://public.planetmirror.com/pub/y...86-2.2.0-4.iso

It is 205MB large and just installs a basic system like Gentoo does.
I am hoping that G32 might try this and get us a Live Boot Cd going with KDE on it ect
So far I am trying to combine it with the Stable Yoper Development Releas to see if I can make a installable version with KDE ect.

G32, will you pla have a look at that development release, and see what you can cook up for us?
As I said it detects and installs fine, but with noe apps ect.

Adios

sweet, i'll try it out =D

suse 9.1 installed without issue, however updating the kernel with yast apparently did not copy the ft3xx module to the new kernel

also, i have had no luck in compiling the ft3xx driver in 2.6, only in 2.4....is there a port available?

KWAGGA, the experimental/beta yoper liveCD does indeed seem to work (albeit with a real lack of utilities on the disc, it didn't even have lsmod)
upon looking at it, it doesn't seem to do anything special though.
it has a 2.6.10 kernel with a bunch of modules built into the kernel (aka the SCSI stuff, etc)

so i'm going to go and try and find (or make) a gentoo liveCD with 2.6.10...
let me know how it goes with making the gentoo livecd .... also there seems to be some patch for PATA at http://lwn.net/Articles/118218/ , people have reported success on 2.6.10 kernels, but i can't try it because i can't boot to my hard drives to begin with...let me know if this works!

Hey Temptress, when you are done Making that Gentto disk, Will you mind putting it up for dload? Or tell us how you did it?

I also have another questionto ask. I used apt-get to install xorg and KDE on the base Yoper system, and it boots fine ect, it is just I cannot Move any of my Windows, and the clode window x'es end minimize buttons are missing :S
Does anyone know how to fix this ? as I cannot move any of my windows around the Desktop! IS this just a Simple setting in KDE that needs to be set? Pls remember I am still a newbie here and was my first time install stuff like this

Thnx in advance.

the reason it works with 2.6.10 is....
- ICH7 SATA support

=)

and i'm not done making my gentoo liveCD with 2.6.10 yet, but when i do i'll try and put it for download, my home upload is rather limited (75 KB/s) but maybe i can setup a torrent or something for it.

Thread Starter
There is a bummer here at the moment with every one who is selling the 9860, ATI X800 ONLY right now. I wonder what is happening. When I get a new notebook in a month or so I hope we can still get the Nvidia 256MB 6800 or better.

adewolf, alienware only sells the NVIDIA GeForce 6800 Go - 256MB with it's 'version' on the sager (the 7700), but they don't seem to sell the card 'alone' in their gear shop yet ;/

on subject:
(after alot of documentation reading i almost have a liveCD ready to test )
it would be a small matter to add KDE and such but right now i want something without X for testing purposes

darktempes,
Is this due to the ICH7 support? I thought the PATA portion of the FastTrak 378/SATA 378 driver, under libata, was broken. I heard that the libata-dev patch (Take a look at http://linux.yyz.us/sata/software-status.html) has a fix for the sata_promise driver that resolves this issue. As such, I was going to try to put together a 2.6.10-r4 kernel + genpatches + libata-dev patch (http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kern...-dev1.patch.gz) and package it in a Gentoo LiveCD. However, I have failed to figure out how to get Catalyst to work well enough to forge a working CD. What documentation are you reading because I am at a loss for any extensive LiveCD HOWTO documentation. If I keep procrastinating, I imagine the next gentoo-dev-sources release will have this libata patch and the problem might just resolve itself. I think currently I will have to make a custom ebuild that is 2.6.10-r4 + this patch but I have no experience making ebuilds either.. I will continue to work on it but I'm not sure how well it will come out. In any case, I'm somewhat confused but interested about the ICH7 you spoke of.

yeah, catalyst documentation sucks ass
i've gotten everything catalyst wise fine and working with a 2.6.10 kernel, just need to get the kernel config right so that it can actually boot the livecd...
and yes it is the ICH7 support that seems to fix the problem

if you wanna try on your own first and try to beat me to getting a working livecd

http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/releng...lyst-howto.xml
http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/releng.../reference.xml

instead of using the portage snapshot method in the howto what i did was type 'catalyst --snapshot 2005.1' -- i think it autoput it in the /var/tmp/catalyst/snapshots/ directory as like 'portage-2005.1.tar.bz2'
then i downloaded a stage3 tarball from one of the gentoo mirrors and placed it in /var/tmp/catalyst/default/
i used the example livecd-stage1 and livecd-stage2 spec files from /usr/share/doc/catalyst-1.1.1/examples/ and there are also good exampls in zbyte64's post here:
http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.p...=asc&start=175
for your kernel config use the config from a liveCD (/proc/config.gz)
that last bit i haven't been able to do cause my only gentoo box around atm doesn't have a cdrom drive so i had to go through and compare the configs by hand -_-
post #72 of 159
Would the /proc/config.gz need to be modified to include ICH7 support and the sort? I have been messing around with a catalyst-free way of making a LiveCD (which is much less install-oriented and more like knoppix). I figured I would finish out the project because I haven't ever made a LiveCD before and perhapse I will play around with the CD some to see if it can be better customized for the 9860. What is it that you need a working Gentoo machine with a CD-Rom for? I do have one here if you needed something in specific I would be happy to help however I could. In any case, the future looks hopeful for PATA and Gentoo on the 9860; well done.

i thought i had it!

i successfully created a livecd booting kernel 2.6.10, using the base system from 2004.3

i enabled the following new options in the kernel:
<*> PROMISE PDC202{46|62|65|67} support [*] Special UDMA Feature
<*> PROMISE PDC202{68|69|70|71|75|76|77} support[*] Enable controller even if disabled by BIOS

i'm not sure how much more specific i can get .... compiled the kernel with everything i needed inside the kernel so i wouldnt have to worry about loading modules... dmesg says scsi0: promise_sata and scsi1: promise_sata but still nothing under /dev/sdx! gah, has anyone else had any luck?

here is my config file: http://www2.oeri.ath.cx/2.6.10-config

i almost forgot..the libata patch! i will try this now!
THE NEW LIBATA PATCH WORKS!!!!!
EXCEPT A LIVECD RELEASE TOMORROW, GENTS!

kernel sees drives separately...need software raid, but i'll just run in ATA mode

CHECK BACK TOMORROW!
w00t

congrats =), so far i've been unsuccessfull with my own livecds so i might wait for yours
post #76 of 159
fyi - pata is also supported in my livecd

does anyone have a high-speed server i can upload my livecd iso to? it's only about 50 mb, but my 30 K/s upsteam will buckle after 2 people try to download it

lemme know, thanks
you could create a bittorrent for it and upload it to a tracker and seed it
and just limit your upload to whatever you're willing to upload
it's perfect for this scenario
ok, i got a working kernel finally that shows the ATA hd's and just pushed it onto a gentoo min install iso

this is basically just for anyone with an alienware 7700 or sage 9860 who has PATA drives and wants them to show up under /dev/sd*

torrent:
http://68.105.154.113:81/install-x86...r1.iso.torrent

my upload is limited to about 75 KB/s so make sure to keep seeding after you finish downloading to make other people happy
thanks @ oeri for his config =)
