Overclocking

Thread Starter
I've been playing around with my oc settings using ATITools and I was just wondering what everyones preferences were for certain games.

For Starwars Battlefront I've been using 460/290 and it has been running great.
For other games like Call of Duty or Battlefield Vietnam if I try to run the game at that setting I get artifacting... does anyone know why? I was thinking it might be the diffence between OpenGL and DirectX.

Does anyone have a suggested safe maximum setting? Please post and share for all games it would help probably a lot of people

Thanks

one reason for the artifacting may be that the gpu is getting a little hot. i have my gpu on my 8790 clocked at 501.43\295.71 (core\memory) and i dont get any artifacts of any sorts. i play games like doom 3, jedi acadamy, KOTOR, UT2K4, quake 3, BF1942, GTA 3, guildwars, jedi knight, freelancer, far cry and a few others with no artifacting, unless im playing in a hot room (but even then not ofen at all). try runing games at what u clocked it to with the fans on max (function key + F10) and see if that helps.

I actually have my GPU clocked at lower speeds than what you have... i have played max at 490/290 and I tried that with Starwars Battlefront... no artifacting, but if I use those same settings for FarCry with the max fan on and I get artifacting withing a few minutes and my temp stays at about 46c... I am a little baffled... I was told that the quality of the hardware is also a factor, so I may have just got a part that has less overclockability than yours. I am not sure, any input would be greatful cause that those brief periods of playing FarCry at that setting are amazing... I have also narrowed it down to RAM artifacting if that might help anyone...

Hey guys i have both my CPU and GPU overclocked. On my GPU i have 529.20 / 299.70 with room to spare. I can go higher but i try to watch the heat. I use the 3D mark porgrams to test it out. I dont like the ATI tool finding the max. But yea i have no problems at all

I am new to benchmarking, can you tell me what a good score is for 3dmark2001...

Also I noticed in ATItools it has an option to show as DDR i believe i can't really tell cause it is cut off... Should I overclock based on the values of that?

what bios level are you at, and what video drivers are you using?
i've been OCing at umm...460/275 or something like that....no artifacts in anything...(doom3, far cry, etc..)

I'm using the updated BIOS and I currently installed the modded Catalyst 4.12 drivers... I did play around with my settings and i get no artifacting at 460/285 now... but i'd like to go higher for HL2 when I get it... but if all else fails i'll just keep my clock settings default. I just wanted that little extra boost

I tried overclocking my GPU through the Omega driver UI; it screwed up Direct3D badly. The DXDIAG test showed the cube spinning faster than the framerate could handle (thus a blur); City Of Heroes locked up as soon as it tried to go to 3D. Simply resetting the clock through the Omega driver UI didn't fix the problem, either; I had to reinstall the Sager-provided video driver to restore the GPU to full functionality.
What did I do wrong? Are there specific, magic clock values that work?

How did you overclock your CPU? I didn't think you could do it since there is not any controls in the bios.

Just a FYI :-

Many of us have noticed better performance (image quality without artifacts and healthy frame rates) with Half Life 2, Doom 3 etc. achieved by "UNDERCLOCKING" the GPU to 350 and 250 (core and mem)

Strange? Not really...there is a long winded explanation if you are interested.

I use 300 core and 200 mem and HL2 is looking awesome with these settings :-

1440x900
32 bit
4X AA
Trilinear
Reflect All
Everything on HIGH

ATi has its on OC tool - ATi Tool is the name of the application.

As far as I know the ATI Tool does not Overcclock your CPU, only the GPU...
This is what the ATI Tool does, nowhere is it mentioned that it will overclock your CPU...

Main Features

No limits overclocking.
Finding maximum core and memory overclock by rendering into a Direct3D window and scanning the output for visual artifacts.
Temperature monitoring and fan speed control (on supported cards)
Removal of Catalyst overclocking lock for 9000/9200/9550/9600 series.
Artifact scanning mode for non-ATI cards - use together with a 3rd party overclocking utility.
Loading a predefined clock profile on Application/Windows startup.
Hotkeys that can be used any time to load clocks from a profile.
3D application detection (Direct3D 8, Direct3D 9, OpenGL) to overclock your video card only when required.
Gamma control

Note to self <- Read before posting

I didnt know he wanted to OC the CPU. Something I personally would not attempt to do in a laptop that doesnt have water cooling. It is hard enough in a desktop with plenty of cooling.

Beware and know that your warranty is Finito if something goes wrong.

And usually - you dont learn the limit until something goes wrong

I don't think I would want to Overclock my laptop either, they get hot enough as it is without inducing even more heat. I have 5 Desktop Pc's that are Overclocked but with the Desktop's at least you have the option to add more or better cooling to keep the temps down.

GSFERRARI, your GPU underclock tip was a MASTER STROKE. The 8790 now runs HL2 artifactless at 1680 x 1050, high video parameters, mobilemeter temp around 52 C.

And to think two days ago I was farting around with bad CDs. Thanks, Bubba!

No problemo buddy. You have to be as jobless as I am to have time to try all these seemingly "retarded" options to find out what works.

I did everything from
* cooling mod
* RAM coolers
* Additional fans
* external keyboard - remove laptop keyboard (flip onto wrist pad) and place fans on the aluminum sheet underneath (to cool GPU)

Did everything...

I finally did what most people consider blasphemy - underclock the GPU and it worked...YAY

I am happy it is an option that produces repeatable results with other members. Happy gaming

Gs and HLer, could both of you guys post what bios, drivers, and the tool you used to underclock the GPU? I've been having massive OCing problems since I put the new bios on, even 5-10 pts will cause artifacts. I clean the machine weekly, and don't have any other background programs running during the tests.

Also, I see some of you are posting you're using the new bios and the latest omegas. I tried to install them last night and *everything* was slow, even just on the desktop. If i right clicked, it would take several seconds for the box to pop up, like it was struggling to even do that. WoW wouldn't even open, saying the 3d card couldn't be initialized. Any suggestions before I RMA?

I am using the new bios... ATITools to OC and I have the 4.12 betas that i found modded... they work great for HL2...
