Dell 5150 Review

I bought my Dell 5150 last september because I wanted a computer that I could use for school and could handle games as well. It worked great for about a month, and then it stopped starting up. I called Dell, and a represenative told me a new HD was on the way. I said, "so i can get rid of the old one?" He said "Yes"... I threw out the HD and a week later I got a call from Dell asking me where the HD was and if I would pay for the new one I had recieved. I was very surprised when they would not even cover the charge of my new hard drive, which lasted only a month. Back to the present. A week ago my 5150 would start to shut off after about 15-20min of use and get very hot. Dell said it was my motherboard and they would need the laptop back. Ok, now they're telling me its going to be another 2 weeks because they are very backed up. 3 WEEKS!!!!! Dell Service is TERRIBLE!!! Also note that this computer is completely incompetant when it comes to games and has trouble even playing games from 2-3 years ago. I bought this system with a 3.0Ghz P4 and 1 GB of RAM. I am never going to buy a Dell again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I bought the 5100 and it had overheating problems which caused it to shut off fairly frequently. Ended up getting my money back on it, and being able to buy a new one. They cleaned the inside of the laptop out during service, so it worked fine when I got it back, after they gave me my moeny back. So I got to keep the 5100 and buy my new 8600!!!

Don't give up on them because of one laptop. My 8600 is flawless. I think the 8600 has a new revision (8600d?), and there is no keyboard flex at all on the new ones. It is fantastic.

I think alot of people have had BAD experiences with the 5100 and 5150's. On my last 5150, the fan was constantly turning on and off and it made a weird chirping noise. Otherwise it was a flawless computer. I ordered have recently ordered an 8600. I hope it will be better than the 5150.
