Remotes for Laptops

Ok. I was looking at pics on the 3790 and noticed it had an infrared transceiver. I was wondering if that is there on US models, (saw it on discountlaptops.com), and wondered if there is a remote that would work for it. Also, I was wondering if anyone knew of a company that makes a remote that lets you turn on and off your computer, open programs, play movies (play, stop, pause, rewind, etc.), and so forth. I have been looking for a remote for a long time that does those things and I was about to buy the alienware 51m because of the look and it had a REMOTE. That is a stupid reason to choose a computer but for some reason I really like sitting in bed and using a remote. Thanks to all who reply.

Don't think so, but it would be a great project. The IR port should be able to receive a remote controller's signals. So, once you figure out what codes the remote is sending to the computer (dump port's I/O), you can re-map them in an application to do whatever you want. I always wanted to do this, but my current lappy doesn't have an IR port.

On another note, you could just try and buy the Alienware remote from someone/somewhere (I'm sure E-bay has it somewhere). There is also a mouse that you use by moving it around in the air. Never tried it, but it would come pretty close to a remote w/out using IR.

For a wireless mouse that can be held in the hand. The gyromouse is pretty cool, we used one in our conference room to make presentations easier. They aren't exactly cheap though. We could easily get 20+ feet from the computer to control it.

You might be interested in this remote. It does require its own receiver (which is a bit of a bummer - I wish it could just use the laptop's integrated IR receiver - but the receiver is included), and it's quite flexible and feature filled and is more of what I think a computer remote should be.

The red light is probably an output for digital audio (optical), but I don't have a 5690 so I can't be sure. The IR port can be used for a few different things, mainly interfacing with phones, printers, and a kind of networking.
