8890 vs. 5680 - Post here while you wait - Page 2

For me, 5670 vs 8887 is an easy choice for one reason: UXGA. I simply will not buy a machine with under SXGA+ resolution (unless it's an ultraportable with a 12" screen). Since the UXGA on the 8887 seems to be a myth (only SXGA seems to exist), I'd be all over the 5670.

5680 vs 8890 is another story, as they're both apparently going to offer UXGA.

With 7200 rpm hard drives available, the RAID ability of the 8890 is less of an advantage.

According to
Adam, both notebooks offer 5.1 sound.

So:
8890 advantages:
MP3 Player
16" screen
TV tuner with S-Video In
6-channel Sound System for ext speakers
Extra PCMCIA slot
Numeric Keypad
16c550 serial port (not that I know what this is)
Extra hard drives

Oddly, Adam's specs don't list an Ethernet card or modem, but I assume the 8890 gets the same:
10/100/1000Mbps Ethernet LAN built-in
56K MDC Modem with V.90 & V.92 compliant
as the 5680.

5680 advantages:
cheaper
lighter
smaller
Second Battery

So that's it.

Which I buy depends on how big one single advantage is: "cheaper"... If the prices are close, I'll go for the 8890, but if there's a big premium for it over the 5680, I'll buy the 5680.

For me I looking at what every will come first. I dont mind having 11 lbs with me that is in a bag when Im taking it to class. Plus all my friends have the 5670 notebooks and I want to get something differnt then them. But the dual battiers do seem like a nice feature. If both notebooks come out at the same time then I may get a 5680 but if not 8890 it is for me.

Its so close to the time.

I for one am definately getting the 8890. I think it's the better machine if you're able to pay the premium.

One question as we talk about sound: while it's clear that the 8890's sound is more desirable with the 5.1 support, if you look at Adam's 6/4/03 post, you'll see that the 5680 has some sound "marketing blurbs" that the 8890 (apparently?) doesn't:

AC’97 2.1 compliant interface
3D stereo enhanced sound system
Compatible Sound-Blaster PRO™

Lately I've been getting more into MIDI and constructing songs/loops on my computers. I wonder if/how these "blurbs" are advantages for the 5680? I also wonder if the 8890 has the exact same things yet they didn't list it because they had to reach for something more to say about the 5680's sound? Any comments or help out there on this? I did purchase a SB Extigy but would like a decent internal soundcard when I need to be more portable.

Thanks

A few quick comments:

Yes, both the 5680 and the 8890 have 5.1 sound, but the 5680 only supports that with spdif on DVD's. The 8890, on the other hand, will most likely be able to hook up an awesome speaker system (like Klipsch Pro-media 5.1's) and you'll have surround sound in games. The 5680 will not support this.

No, even $600 headphone won't be able to emulate back and forward channel surround sound

Also, the 6-pin firewire on the 8890 will more likely be unpowered, just as it is in the 8887. Firewire ports draw too much power for the battery to handle, so niether the 4 or 6 pin ports will be powered.

Midi is a supported standard on sound cards nowadays, "Sound Blaster compatible" does not give a system an advantage in anything, as every single soundcard I know of is sound blaster compatible. Again, the 8890's sound will probably be better than the 5680's, because it is integrating a more advanced system with 6channel sound.

The 8887 did have a UXGA screen before, but it disappeared a while ago. Perhaps it will reappear with the release of the 8890...

Yes, RAID will still make a difference with 7200 RPM drives available. Try RAIDing 2 7200 rpm drives

Heck yeah, double the performance and a much higher burst rate.

I get 40MB/sec average on my Raid on my desktop and the thing FLYS. Raid rocks, and its one of the easiest system speedups IMO because it affects everything, boot up time, game load time, etc.

BTW I dont know if people have noticed but the 7200 RPM drives are available as options to the 8887 and 5670 etc now ... probably you have but I hadn't - 200+ bucks for the upgrade though.

4760 question

I know this thread is about the other two models, but I seem to remember Adam posting a far off date for the loaded version of this machine, but I can't find it. Does anybody know? I was thinking December for some reason... Thanks!

Right now it's scheduled for October but it's not really confirmed or in stone.

But you can't get an 8887 UXGA today. I refuse to buy anything less than SXGA+, which rules out the 8887 right now, so I'd take the 5670.

I didn't say RAID wouldn't make a difference with 7200 drives, I said it would be less of an advantage. The 7200 drives bump the max speed of the 5680 from 5400 to 7200. But the max speed of a 8890 without 7200 drives is 4x5400 RAID-0, which should be more than fast enough for most people already. So the relative advantage of RAID goes down as drive speeds go up, because your net drive speed, like everything else, has diminishing returns.

Yeah, but I've never run into a system where drive speed wasn't ultimately the bottleneck! Screw it, I'm going to get as fast as I can!

Still waiting...

I think I'm losing my mind here!

I bought Neverwinter Nights at Best Buy this week and I'm not going to play it until I get my laptop (As if waiting for the 8890 release wasn't torture enough...)

I think I'm looking forward to the tv tuner option more now after searching these forums. I want to convert all my vhs tapes into digital format and start collecting x-files eposides from tv.

Well, I'm off to refresh the news section...
it so close. about 1 week more to wait.
Yes, if it does't show up early next week... it will be disappointing.

Isn't it like a week and half wait after it shows up and you can preorder it?

Then after that at least a couple days for shipping and possible day or something for delay cause everyone will be buying that day

So figure Early august at best at the moment to get your machine...

I hope to show it to a friend who will be going back to college again ... and I'm sure a lot of you are hoping to get it before going back as well.

I think a lot of my anxierty will be over when I actually place my order... until then, I'm aching to see this thing COME OUT with official specs.

Gotta check that bank roll of mine too...
Exactly... I wouldn't mind a week wait after you could pre-order before it shipped. Just seeing it, being able to tweak your perfect machine and ready that order... I've been so anxious to do this, waiting since February everyday, that I'll be too afraid to place the order and take the big step

102 keyboard, 2 type2 pcmcia slots

I think the 102 keyboard helps a lot when doing math.
The 888x series is the only one with 2 type 2 pcmcia slots. Neither of the machines come with wifi 802.11 options. If a pcmcia slot would be used up for that, it would be nice to have one extra slot open.
When I buy my next laptop, I want it to last a long long time, like I am doing now, with my P2 266MHz Compaq, on which I run ProE, a dozen browsers and Word, Excel all at once, not to mention the chat pgms. I want to be able to fit as many peripherals as upcoming technologies can give. That is why I am looking forward to the 8889. Maybe I can watch a little TV on the side as well.
