New Purchase (8790)... Need Accessories... Full review coming.. - Page 3

Well, it's on it's way to Ca. to be fixed. Only problem is.. I live in MD and UPS doesn't pick up on new year's eve. So now it's the waiting game for it to travel 3,000 miles across ground (air travel 2 day would costed about $170, f*** that ).

Question to Adam, Luke and the bunch, will Sager reimburse me for paying to ship it out to them? It was $70, and although it doesn't sound like much, college is coming and so are bills.

Well, my desk and lap are empty and I have a feeling I'll be going through withdrawals soon. Fried, help. If anything, I got GTA:SA, Ace Combat V, PoP:WW and NFSU2 to keep me busy on the PS2, so I think I'll be OK for a while.

I didn't mention the fact that I bought FarCry, Full Spectum Warrior, Lesiure Suit Larry: Manum Cum Laude, and UT2K4, did I? They're sitting nicely on my desk, next to where my 8790 used to me.. $100 and I can't play them..

Arghh.. .I need a drink, happy new year!!

Sort of off topic, but I use a breakfast tray for my lappy in bed. Keeps the weight off my legs and the heat if there is any.

Small Update:

FarCry
Installed FarCry and set everything to Very High (I believe in overkill now) and tried it out. No Problems!! It ran beautifully, although I suck at the game so far. [For anyone who's played it, I'm stuck at chooper fight on carrier, the damned thing kills me 3/4 of the time I pop out of the top of the hole]. I'll provide screenshots when I get back on [I hate work.]

Half Life 2 Demo
Ummmm... wow. I'd been playing the original HL on the old laptop shown in the comparison pictures earlier in the thread. The 8790 holds up so well that I thought about the finanicial debts I'm going to get myself into later on. I intend on buying the Collector's Edition of HL2 after I save up the money.

Anyway, I'll periodically drop in with quick reviews of the games I'd bought and specs on how they play.

RAM Advice..

Was checking through PCTorque.com and Crucial.com to see what kind of money I'd be spending to double my 8790's RAM to 1024 MB.

First, since all my info said was:
RAM: 512MB 400DDR Dual Channel (2-256MB)

Ok, so I have 400DDR Ram, outstanding.

Logic would say that PCT sells the RAM also for the 8790, right?
http://pctorque.com/hardware.php#117
(They do, but let's continue)

Now, all I know is that I have what's bolded above.. so over to Crucial.com I go.
http://www.crucial.com/store/listmod...ackage&cat=RAM
Left side, near the top: DDR 3200(DDR400)

Seems right, but same question: Why isn't RAM universally organizated? So many different versions, it makes my damned head spin.

I understand with computers, everything changes so everything has variables, but buying RAM, to me anyway, seems to be detective work.

Lemme go finish beating Leisure Suit Larry; I'll post back here later on when I get my head on straight.

Not sure about the RAM, but I was stuck at that stupid place in Far Cry for ages too. I think I finally did it by popping up, then ducking back down again. Took a while though. Nice bag too - is that the Targus?

The chopper fight was easier than I thought.. all I did was jump in the water and snipe the boat down and took careful shots from underneath the boats hull at the chooper gunner..

if you want more pics of the Targus TSB312, let me know.

DVD Burning Update

G-Ohama had informed me a couple days ago that my firmware was a little bit dated when I'd asked him for what type of disks to buy to burn DVD's.

Well, I made my trip to Wal-Mart (yes, i am a american ) and Best Buy and picked up some prospectives..

Warning to Noob DVD Burners: When first inserted into your drive, Windows XP will recognize it as a blank CD-RW, so you must use your DVD burning software to be able to burn DVDs. Don't freak out!!

First, I tested out the FujiFilm DVD+RW 4x and backed up my MP3 collection..

Link: Fujiflim DVD+RW 4x

The burn/verification took a little over a half an hour to burn 3.2 GB of music over a home network. It works, so I'm satisified.

Next Up, the Maxell DVD+R 4x..

Link: Maxell DVD+R
Haven't tested it out yet, but will soon..

In Other News..
I looked at my old shoe rack and thought that it would make a good cooling stand. So, I took my plastic-covered metal rack and cut the legs off at about the one-inch mark. Pics are as follows.. MobMeter is currently showing a 34 C reding while I'm typing on it..

It's Holy!!

Height from Desk I Use..

From the last pic, it's obvious I need some sort of 'rubber feet' because the desk is getting scratched to hell. So.. New Desk vs. Overheating Laptop..

Decision: Scratches on desk so character.

Glad you are happy happy.

If you burned from a local disk the "event" should have been completed a bit sooner. In total the "bit over a half hour" indicates that you did attain a 4x burn rate.

Another Update:

Concerning the RAM, I'd e-mailed Luke concerning what was the stock type of RAM used in the 8790s.. He'd said that the Apacer 512 stick was in mine..

So, for anyone still using/loving/owning noobs with theirs, here's a link to NewEgg's 512 stick:

Problem Update
I've been posting problem threads all over the place, instead of in here, simply because that's the rules of the forum.

UT2004 Will mess up your screen

HD Upgrade
http://www.notebookforums.com/showthread.php?t=114303

As of right now, the laptop is being RMA'ed once more for the HD problem. They're also going to look at the GPU and see if it's broken/damaged as well.

Ty @ Sager had asked me to write-up the problems that the laptop has had, so I figured I'd share with the class.
Quote:
RMA: 10105652
This RMA was given to me for the odd computer resolution problem that I’ve had.

Problem: The monitor froze while playing UT2004. A manual shutdown and a restart caused a major resolution problem and lines going up the screen. It seemed that the GPU/Video Card became too hot.

Temporary Solution: Left the 8790 in an air-conditioned room for 24 hours to cool down the machine. Booted the laptop, and the problem fixed itself.

I have documented the problem on a notebook message board that covers Sager laptops.
http://www.notebookforums.com/showthread.php?t=111239

Also, I purchased a new HD for my 8790. It’s an exact replica of the HD currently in the computer. I bought a HD ribbon from David sometime last week and it arrived this week.

I attempted to format the drive using Disk Management in Dynamic mode, and the laptop froze. Did a manual shutdown and waited about 15 minutes. Did research between basic and dynamic drives; decided that basic was what I needed. Restarted the computer, logged in my profile, and tried re-formatting the drive through Disk Management, again, the laptop froze. Manual shutdown, booted into Safe Mode. Attempted to format the second drive a 3rd time in Basic formatting = successful.

Waited until formatting was complete, and rebooted machine to login to my profile. The 2nd HD showed up in My Computer correctly. I noticed that the second HD was written in blue text instead of normal black. I attempted to move a few mp3’s from the Desktop over to the new HD, the machine froze. Manual shutdown, and restarted again.

Logged into my profile, deleted what was on the 2nd HD. (Note, all files on 2nd HD were in blue text as well). Attempted to move over songs again… BSOD. 0x000000F7 STOP Error. Manual shutdown, restart again. Got the following message after HD’s are detected in BIOS:
"Windows cannot find the following files because they are missing or corrupt:
C:\Windows\system32\system\
Press "r" to repair from the WinXP disk."

I have documented the problem on a notebook message board that covers Sager laptops.
http://www.notebookforums.com/showthread.php?t=114303

If the Sager technicians are able to fix the primary HD to properly boot into Windows, that will be great. Unfortunately, if that’s not the case, go ahead and reformat the drive. I’ll re-install Windows if necessary. Also, I would like the second HD to be installed. If something is wrong with the drive, please let me know ASAP so that I can return it to NewEgg.com, where I bought it from.

It's off to go be fixered... I've down so much on that machine that it probably needs to be reformatted, so if both HD's are wiped clean, I'm not concerned.

I'm just now getting over the flu, 100-103F fevers, and a severe strep throat, so this laptop right now is the least of my worries.
