New Purchase (8790)... Need Accessories... Full review coming.. - Page 4

Was wondering why I hadn't seen you online while I've been over here in the States (not that I've been online much, tho'). Hope you're feeling better soon.

My machine's on its way back, so we'll see what happened while there. How many times has yours been RMA'd now? Dang it. G just had artifacting on his, too. Bad bad bad

Things that make you go.... What the F@#$
Got this e-mail from David Liu yesterday afternoon:

Joey,
Just received the unit on 11-04...
Out of warranty service, we need 10 working days before contact you for the estimate.

Me, being the post whore I once was, remembered "Hey, I pasted my receipt on NBF, aha!" (First post of this thread, matter of fact)

Bought it on the 11/19.... tis not a year yet.

I was told it was under warranty until 12-05 by someone that works there within 3 days.

Also, I bought the machine in mid November from PCTorque.com, I attached a copy of the receipt. If I remember Sager's policy correctly, Sager covers the laptop for one full year after the purchase.

Please phone me ASAP to get this resolved; I do have a warranty through Phillips to cover it if the above information is wrong.
Awaiting a phone call/reply. Laptop's still over in CA.

While waiting for my laptop back, I've invested about $100 in DVD Box Sets. I think I'm starting to lose my fragile little mind.
Sorry to hear about your troubles. I hope everything gets resolved. They should still cover your warranty. If they dont you can get on them real good *evil laugh*

Hold on to your fragile little mind though! Insanity may be fun, but you'll need at least a little bit of sanity to get through this lol
post #64 of 107
Only a hundred invested? You oughtta see the pile o' DVDs I brought back... OY!

That's screwy that David was pulling your chains on the dates. I spoke w/ Allen Zhang the other day and he said that there were 3 techs in there answering phones and that often they would get mixed up as to who was doing which call, etc. so things got a little confusing. That might've happened in this case.

As for your fragile little mind, don't worry about it. I've been w/o mine for years and it doesn't seem to hinder me much.

Sorry, my mistake.
Yes, the unit warranty is until 12-1-05, so is 3 working days..
Seems someone got confused on their end... It's Tuesday now, laptop should be finished by Friday (hopefully) and I should have it back late next week (really hoping).

I like my sanity, but between 3 jobs, the GF, Rescue Squad http://www.pfvrs.net, and 3 college classes, I'm guessing that DVD's are my only safe haven. Watched Full Metal Jacket last night.

Coming and Going...

Hi <first name>, we have checked your computer. The computer passed all the hardware checking including the two hard drives. However, the Windows on the C: drive is corrupted. You may run Windows' repair to fix it. We will ship the computer out later today.

It's on it's way home... the hard drives, hardware wise, are perfectly fine. It seems that Windows puked when I was moving files 2 weeks ago. The BSOD I guess struck the final nail in the coffin.

Looking back, I printed off (much to my parent's annonayce) a walkthrough of the Recovery Console for XP. Stupid me, it wasn't installed on my machine, therefore, I couldn't use it. (note to self: you owe parents $40 for new black ink cartridge)

I know in Win2K, while using the OEM CD, that you can reinstall Windows by installing the vital files for Windows to work somwhere in the install process, but I'm a) hoping that it works for XP and b) doesn't wipe my primary HD clean in the process.

Also, if I do re-install Windows, I'm thinking of setting up RAID 0 for both drives, giving me 120GB to play with. Thoughts? Ideas?
If you do go the "RAID-0" route - please insure that you delete the partitions off of both drives and then fully format them - The SLOOOOOWWWW format option. That will insure every sector on the disk is "touched" in some manner and reduce the likelyhood of unwanted "suprises" later on.

Got it back, still has the Windows error. Was hoping the magic mail goblins would fix the problem. Installing Windows again with the SLOW route on the primary drive. Decided to not go with RAID 0 right now... I believe that I can add it later. (but if not, it's fine by me; G, if I can, verify it please).

My only concern: Both drives are "blank" = no jumper pins and all partitions deleted (The secondary HD will be formatted in NTFS after XP is installed). Will I need jumper pins for both drives to show up correctly?

It's 5:00 PM EST, and the game is on.
I was told by Allen that jumpers are not necessary for the 2nd drive.

Everyone, it's alive!!!!

Just installed Windows and OpenOffice and formatted the second drive.. everything's working perfectly. Throwing all un-vital programs and games on second HD to let the primary run faster with Windows booting and what not.

Didn't use the RAID 0 setup... didn't want to head down that road. Too excited to get my laptop back up and running. Once I get my home LAN back up and running, I'm going to Ghost my primary HD so that I have a no-shit, SP2 ready image just in case.

Life is good, and getting better. I turn 21 on Friday.

Spoke Too Soon...

Restarted the computer, Windows froze. Hmmm..not good. Removed 2nd drive, shortcuts were FUBAR, Windows behaved.

Internet seems slow, but I think that's because I have "Very Low" service with 54.0 MBps. Hmm indeed.

For now, I'm just going to through everything back on my primary (that I know damned well works) and get my home LAN backup box back online with FTP and whatnot.

Damn it, I was hoping the secondary hard drive would work out ok... Thinking about drinking early...

I thought Sager has a solid fixed in 3 days guarantee...

They do... once they recieve the laptop.

As for an update: I've gotten everything pretty much back to normal with my laptop. It's still only using the primary HD, and the secondary is sitting on my desk. I'm starting to think that the connecting ribbon is like a human tongue at pointing out at me.

I'll be calling NewEgg and asking for my money back unless I decide to keep it, just in case a) I decide to try RAID again, or b) I can RAID after installing Windows. (it did come with a lifetime warranty)

I'm Never Going To Get Any Homework Done..
Talked to Freejack for a bit concerning my drives... he had some words of wisdom I though I'd share with anyone going through the same problem [edit: not problem, but can't think of a good synonym] I am concerning the 'laggy' secondary HD.

[22:00] Boogieman117: it's boogieman
[22:00] Boogieman117: ? for you
[22:00] Freejack: hey
[22:00] Boogieman117: got a sec?
[22:00] Freejack: yep
[22:00] Boogieman117: in your 8790, do you have 1 or 2 drives?
[22:01] Freejack: 2
[22:01] Boogieman117: ok..
[22:01] Boogieman117: are they RAID'ed together, or are they seperate?
[22:02] Freejack: seperate, I didn't want to raid on it since it's for gaming
[22:02] Boogieman117: and both drives are working fine?
[22:03] Freejack: yep, why you have some issues?
[22:03] Boogieman117: yeah
[22:03] Freejack: what's happening?
[22:03] Boogieman117: take a look at my review thread
[22:04] Boogieman117: i've documented everything there
[22:04] Boogieman117: search for a thread named 8790 ordered, accessories coming...
[22:04] Freejack: ok
[22:04] Freejack: brb]
[22:05] Boogieman117: http://www.notebookforums.com/showth...t=51005&page=2
[22:05] Boogieman117: that's it
[22:05] Boogieman117: read from post 68 down
[22:12] Freejack: ok that makes me think you have a HD going bad or flaky
[22:12] Boogieman117: right
[22:12] Boogieman117: but, Allen Zhang from Sager told me that both drives hardware wise, were fine
[22:12] Boogieman117: the primary seems to be the only drive that works right.
[22:12] Freejack: do you have any extra drives you could throw in there besides the 2 you have?
[22:13] Boogieman117: no
[22:13] Boogieman117: I don't have any laptop HD's laying around
[22:13] Boogieman117:
[22:13] Freejack: ok try running it with one drive for 72 hours
[22:13] Boogieman117: i've been running it with one drive for a few days now
[22:13] Freejack: if it does fine then swap drives for 72 hours and see if it drops out
[22:14] Freejack: if not then it may be that 2nd ide 4th ide channel
[22:14] Freejack: you know your sager has 5 ide channels
[22:14] Freejack: 6
[22:14] Boogieman117: nope
[22:14] Boogieman117: I was surprised when 4 showed up in the BIOS
[22:15] Freejack: there is actually 6
[22:15] Freejack: your cdrom is on the master ide with a spare channel then drive 1 has another channel hidden and drive 2 same
[22:17] Freejack: what driver are you running for the ide? is it promises or microsatans?
[22:18] Boogieman117: default drivers that came with the laptop....
[22:18] Boogieman117: dunno how to answer your question.
[22:18] Freejack: go to system and device drivers and check the driver for the promise and see if it's promises or microsfts driver
[22:20] Boogieman117: under SCSI and RAID controllers..
[22:20] Boogieman117: it's Microsoft's
[22:21] Freejack: you need to go to promises site and get teh last driver they have for the ide PCD206?? something like that
[22:21] Freejack: if you load that driver it will not give you another problem in windows, that's why I switched to linux

[22:22] Boogieman117: ok
[22:22] Boogieman117: i'll have to do it after the college semester ends...
[22:23] Boogieman117: you mind if I post this in the ongoing thread I have started, for reference?
[22:24] Freejack: No prob go ahead
[22:24] Boogieman117: thanks
[22:24] Boogieman117: I may find it useful later on
[22:24] Freejack: np

Thanks again Jack. You the man.

any updates?

Nope, not really...

I seemed to have misplaced my secondary HD and I'm smack dab in the middle of college classes, so I'm not able to attempt to add the secondary.

Of course, that hasn't stopped me from using the DVD writer with Newgroups..

Small Update:

Today after my 250 GB drive showed up for my backup box, I backed up my Windows XP installation using the Backup program built in.

Once the backup was done, I cleaned my room. Guess what I found.

I downloaded the Promise drivers posted above, and TA DA!

I now have my secondary HD running nice and .... warm. 5C hotter than the primary.. Not too terribly worried though; the latop hasn't frozen, which was my main concern.

Thanks again Freejack.
I've got a Seagate 100gb in my secondary bay and it hasn't seemed to've made a huge difference in heat. Good to see that you finally found yours

Well, after using it for one day, I've noticed the secondary does the following:

1) Media (waves, mp3s, movies files, etc) sound choppy.
2) After gaming, the secondary is about 10C higher then the primary.

I'm thinking it's so damned hot because it's right next to the 108 Mbps Wi-Fi card, so I dunno.

More news as it comes.

I've also had issues with my HDD freezing up as well. I initially thought that windows xp was the culprit but the freezing up issue wouldn't go away even after I had repaired the OS. It's now on its way back to Hitachi.

After reading your review though, I'm beginning to think that maybe it was a device driver issue. I've searched the Promise web site but I'm having a hard time figuring out what to download. I would appreciate it if you can direct me to the appropriate download on that site.

And also, I'm thinking about upgrading my RAM as well. What was the name of the RAM that you purchased a while back ago? Thanks.
