I know this is stupid .. but are internal adsl modems lower in performance than external ??? or do they eat cpu resources ???

cos i'm trying to minimise all my peripherals including modems .. hence this stupid question ..

go external
more flexibility allows for connection sharing much easier with the use of a router
no additional software or drivers needed on your computer

I second that. I would try my best to put everything as external unless that particular device required alot of bandwith (TV Tuner, RAID card, etc.). It can minimize crosstalk as well.

How about you just go with Cable modem instead. DSL sucks in most area's of the country still.

Well, ive gotten 3MB/s on an ADSL line. That dosnt seem to suck in my books.

My Cable line is 4 Mbps. I used to have a 5 Mbps, and a 10 Mbps option through another ISP that got bought out.

And your's is not 3 MBps, its 3 Mbps. That much I can guarentee. Big difference between bits and bytes.

And as for aDSL in most area's of the country it's not quite that fast. In Denver its 1.5 Mbps. You live in Hong Kong. I am talking about the US, which unless you live in some area's of Texas, California, and spots on the East Coast. Cable Modem is faster DL speed.

I have DSL because cable companies are too uptight about end users running servers. Often port 80 is blocked, and then there is the hassle of the IP changing. I'm sure some will say that their IP has been the same for 6 months. But this is not he case for everyone.

Static IP address for booga.

I know what you mean about Megabytes per second and Megabits per second, but there was one time were i WAS downloading at 3 megabytes per second. I wasnt quoting the cable operator's claims. I have the screenshot if you want me to prove it.

Also, i hear cable is alot more expensive than DSL, but i could be wrong cuz i dont think we got Cable here in HK, just alot of DSL.

Cable is almost the same as DSL .. just that in peak periods .. it can tend to suck .. anyway yeah as you guys were saying that I should try to minimise internal loads, but on the contrary I'm trying to minimise my external loads .. i want to integrate everything all into the pc so that i dun need my modem seperate etc etc .. but anyway thx for feedback guys

When cable first rolled out here through @Home many moons ago, it was great. 10Mbps down, 1.5Mbps up. Then Charter stuck their nose in and screwed it up. They made everyone get a DOCSIS standard modem and capped it at 1.5Mbps down/128k up. They are now back up to 5Mbps down/512k up. I switched to DSL immediately when the made me get a DOCSIS modem and capped me. I figured if I was going to be stuck at 1.5Mbps, I would do it with the far more stable DSL. DSL is now up to 3Mbps in my area. While slower than cable's current speeds here, it is MUCH MUCH more stable than cable is, and Charter caps newsgroup downloads here at a measely 128k. What's the use of having the broadband if the cable Nazis tell me what I can and can't use it for? For the same price I can D/L at 3Mbps or 128kbps. Hmmm tough decision for me
