Hi all.
I have a Sony Vaio laptop Model PCG-F590 (PCG-9201) Made in USA and bought from ebay.com. The model is probably dated early 2001. It has an 8X DVD-ROM.
I want to know if it can read DVDs recorded in the DVD-R and (the newer) DVD+R formats. These are data DVDs (not movies) and will be sent to me by a friend in the US.
My only apprehension is that mine is an old drive, (early 2001). Most newer drives (2003 onwards) are multi-read as regards format.
My drive is probably during the introductory era of DVDs, when there was an initial period of conflict / supremacy between formats introduced by competing multimedia giants such as Sony, Toshiba, Pioneer, Panasonic, etc.
Thanks for the guidance and help.
Regards,

(p.s. How old is the DVD-R format? Is my drive, of early 2001, older than the introduction date of this format?)
