Why I just bought a Dell

Thread Starter
I'm sorry to say it, but I just bought a Dell Inspiron 5150. It was a difficult decision (after weeks of agonizing) and I hope to own a Sager someday--when I can justify paying for a fully spec'd one! Using a coupon and preferred customer account, the price of the Dell couldn't be beat. I got it for under 1400$(including shipping)
Processor: Mobile P4 3.06
RAM: 512ddr333(part of coupon deal, will upgrade 2 512's myself)
HD: 40gb at 5400rpm
Optical: DVD burner
FSB: 533
Screen: 15 SXGA (we'll see how it is)
Graphics: 32MB RADEON 9000
My reasoning for this purchase was price but also timing. It seems like we're at a sort of curve in chip development--with the P5 around the corner, etc. I was considering beefing up a 5680 when they come out but I feel that the money would go much further in a laptop in a year or so--which of course is always the story but it seems espcially so right now. That said, I think the 5680 and 8890 should be exciting purchases. Good luck!

Congratulations, no one here is going to be upset or disappointed because you went with a laptop outside of Sager. I myself have the Toshiba S705 . For me , it was the best decision based off of my needs and wants in a laptop and I do not regret it in the least.

If you could perhaps do a review of things you like/dislike that would be great. It's good to have those who own other brand laptops to post on these boards to give others an idea of what they will be getting in that particular company if they decide to go with it.

Sounds like you got a really good deal as I can say making the final decision to finally buy was real tough for me also.

Albert you got the S705 as did I.. just wondering if you had any complaints or problems so far? The only problem I have seen so far is it gets VERY hot on the back left vent where the CPU is when playing 3D games ( of course ) .. but its so hot I cannot place this on my legs, I need a book or a towel in between.

This could also be because I am a wuss, but nonetheless its getting hot.

Other than that I love this machine, I currently play the following games on it:

Battlefield 1942
Enemy Territory ( looks AWESOME at 1600x1200x32 )
WC3+Expansion
Wizardy 8
Planescape: Torment
Baulders Gate 2

They do need to drop the price on this thing soon tho.

Yeah I am absolutely amazed at the S705. I told myself if I didn't like anything about it I would just return it , but that is the farthest from the case. I couldn't see myself getting anything else for the most part as I am digging the screen/sound/and great performance with gaming and anything else I throw at it . I am playing Command and Conquer generals on it better then my desktop played it, and at the fastest speed. At 1600x1200 it looks and plays fantastic , but I wouldn't play with more then one computer as things start to slow down a bit once you expand and get more units since the computer is doing the same thing it just taxes the graphics card too much since everything in CC/Gen is so dynamic.

I would have to agree with you about the heat . It does get pretty warm on the bottom but I have that laptop desk that has cooling grooves at the bottom so it helps it out alot and it puts a barrier between the laptop and my lap so I don't feel the heat at all.

The price was a bit hefty though, like you said, but I feel it was worth the money. I got mine from CompUSA and got the three year extended warranty because I don't want to feel like crap if anything goes wrong. It gives you purchase security.

I plan on doing a review, but one that is not really tech oriented and more for the person looking at things in layman terms. I'll put a link to your review and the one at Tom's hardware so for those people that are looking for the numbers they can check it out since you did a really good job showing the performance specs of the S705 along with some good pics.

I'm still deciding if I should put pictures or not, since you pretty much covered giving someone a pretty good idea of what the S705 looks like

Maybe they came in through TALKNOTEBOOKS.COM - it is possible they never even typed in 'sager' to get where they ended up posting!

Anyway, it's good to hear and see other laptop user's experiences on their particular setups.

I certainly am. It is a treasure trove of information and opinions.

All laptop owners are welcome here. I have a few IBM Thinkpads here that I think are great systems and respect the Dell a lot along with many different brands. I think each have their benefits and this is exactly why we have a notebook general section. If there become enough talk of Dell and reviews, they will get their own section here as Alienware did.

MMMM, IBM Thinkpad, I my 600x

I would have a Sager, but I'm too poor ATM, and I figure I can wait a bit for whatever is next.

Actually the real benefit of having owners of other laptops here is that it reminds us Sager owners of why we went with PC Torque and Sager in the first place .

Having owned serveral laptops in the past (Sun/RDI Britlite, Acer, Toshiba) I just wished I had found this place much earlier.

You may also find http://www.x1000forums.com another useful site. It is specifcally for the HP x1000 but like any well populated forum it too is a treasure trove of great information.

The X1000 froum is what ultimatly conviced me to buy a Dell Pentium M machine...go figure....I though I needed a desktop chip to do anything! But after building a few and seeing the friggin size of the fans and heatsinks on the processors and Vcards I could not see how they would run intense apps in a Lappy without heat issues. A look around the forums proved my suspicions. Many freeze, lockup, reboots, heat issues all of em!

So I decided on the M chip after realizing they are not terribly far in performance at least in real world application. The X1000 was a nice machine but I wanted the faster RAM and HD. The SXGA screen was fine as I am used to 1178 on a 19" desktop. The 5200go runs everything I have thrown at it well enough and the lappy stays coooooll Fan rarely speeds up.

Yeah Had my finger on the trigger of a Sager...but Im happy with what I ended up with and for the money and what I can do on it Ecxastatic! In a couple years I 'll buy another for the same money. Lappys are disposable consummables to me!
