9860 Dead Display.... Anyone else have this problem?

Shut the thing down, then came back a few hours later and nothing.... I hear fans and the Power light goes on, but no display.... Tired w/ AC and without. NO GO!

Please help with similar issues(&resolution) or suggestions.... Thanks!

Check if you can get anythin with an external display.

Try the Fn=F7 to see if that changes things.

There is a itty bitty switch (at about "1 o'clock" to the power button - it should be fully up. This controls the power to the LCD. This could be "stuck down. Sometime "gently" hitting it with a pen or toothpick might cause the LCD to light up or flicker.

'I do not see the small switch you speak of near the power switch.. Are you talking about the 9860?

the FN key down by your left hand control key. hold that and tap the f7 key. Might just be you have you laptop set to use an external display instead of the lcd.

I'm a network admin in the Air Force, and if I had a dollar for everytime I had a customer that had accidently set the laptop to external display, I'd buy me a 9860.

Oh, wait. I did buy a 9860 and I hope it will be here tomorrow

The 9860 has the sensor hidden in the hinge somewhere. It activates when the lid is about 30 degrees before closing.

hey there mxdirt, try this, turn of the notebook, take the battery power thingee out of the notebook and restart the CPU and see what happens.

I'm having the same problem - it seems like when the 9860 is coming out of power saving (monitor off) that I have this problem. Not a big deal, i've just disabled the monitor off saving feature, BUT - I am getting the same problem when I attempt to run AquaMark3 or 3DMark05 - can start either test, but when the screen goes blank it never comes back. I have tried the Fn+F7, Esc, Ctrl+x, Ctrl+c, Ctrl+Alt+Del, Alt+Tab, Alt+F4.....

I might be having 2 different problems though. When I was dealing with the power saving issue where the screen did not come back, I was able to bring things back by Suspending the laptop (closing the lid or Fn+F4), but with the benchmarking software, only a hard shutdown (holding the power button down), and reboot would restore the display.

Any thoughts?????

Villious: I am not a Moron... I know how to Fn+F7 to switch displays... this was not the issue. I have worked as a Performance & Capacity Planning Engineer for 15+ years. I sorta know my way around a notebook... ya know! <wink> And I also know when something is really "F-ed" up too.... LOL! This situation was FUBAR... therefore you won't be that dollar from my situation....hehe! Regards ~MXdirt~

P.S. Thanks to all with the advise. I did some snugging up of HD connectors and some reboots with power off/on and battery out/in and eventually got it back.

yeh that happend to me and thats why i suggested it. best to turn off your PC going into sleep or whatever when you close the lid.

Apparently I figured out that you need to press the power button once to get your screen back, if you reboot your PC it wont come back unless you take the power off the laptop.

I am having the same problem. Non of the Benchmark tests run. The screen goes blank and the computer does not respond or the system reboots itself.
I also have a similar problem trying to run NFSU2 when the game start a get to play it for 10-15 seconds and then the system freezes up or reboots. 3dmark 2001 works on the gametest 1 perfectly, but as soon as the screen goes blank after loading game test 2 same thing happens, either freezes or reboots. After a long fight and trying all the different drivers and reinstaling WindowsXP I got the first test in 3Dmark05 working but it died after loading the second one. It is very enoying. Farcry runs wonderfull, very good performance, but it dies on the benchmark tests and NFSU2. I am afraid to buy new games I wanted to buy, like DOOM3 or HL2 because I am not sure if they will work.

Well, I finally did get both 3Dmark05 and 03 to run thru - but not every time. I'm not sure what the problem is with that - I have not had too much time to play with it just yet, but will see what I can find out. I am also getting the same problem in aquamark - i get the loading screen, then when the first test should start, nothing but a blank screen.

I don't have NFSU2 or Doom3, but I can say that HL2 and EQ2 run very smooth - no locking up or freezing.

Thats good that you managed to run them somehow. Can you please post the solution to this problem if you find it? I will be very apreciated. If I will find the solution before I will post it

I added 3DMark03 and 3DMark05 free versions to my review after you guys were reporting errors trying to run them. 3DMark05 did not run right and I got a D3D error but the 3DMark03 ran correctly for me.

Now this is really odd ..I ran all the bench mark programs with little trouble..I did turn my screen down to the res the program was using.. Aquamark gave me an error about resolution ..and 3dmark gave me something like screen is out of focas?? Anyway I changed res to match the program and it ran just fine.. but I did that after the first error so no more problems after that..sort of forgot about it til saw everyone else had trouble..
Well - did some more testing.

Set the native resolution to 1024x768 to match the benchmarking res.
On the GPU:
Core Clock: 299MHz
Memory Clock: 696MHz

AquaMark: 47726 (this is the first time AquaMark has run - before at a higher desktop resolution it would not start the test - would just go to the blank screen which requires a hard shutdown)

3DMark03: 8231 (I have had better luck with 3DMark03 than with 05 - it would run at a higher desktop resolution, but not always)

3DMark05: 3 out of 4 times I got the blank screen, and had to hard shut down - the other time I got this error:

IDirect3DDevice9::PresentFailed : Device Lost (D3DERR_DEVICELOST)

So 3DMark05 would not run after 4 times trying - I don't want to keep trying this - A hard shutdown is not a good thing for my new laptop! Maybe someone with a test unit could work at this a bit more...

On the gaming front:

I have had NO problems with ANY games I have installed and played (EQ2, HL2, NWN, Sims2) - every game runs great - no blank screen problem. I will test more after I have had this a bit - and report any other issues.

(I really love this laptop!!!!!!!!!)

I got the same error on 3dMark05 (free version) but it ran 2 times. Only the FPS were so low that I knew it was not working right so uninstalled it.

Yeah - from my limited benchmarking experience, it seems like some work, some don't - you really have to play around with them. But as long as my games work good, I am HAPPY!!!

Hey, I fixed all my problems with crushing in benchmark. First thing I did, I went to the display properties adn in 'digital panel settings" I set I turned on ''fixed aspect ratio scaling'' instead of "display adapter scaling". It emidiately got read of porblem with 3dmark03, I could run it once. then it crushed couple times.
I didn't have anything else to do and open the memory slots compartement. Gues what they send me my laptop with one 512 ram wich was inserted in the double chanel slot. Obviously it didn't want to run with out another 512 next to it. So I relocated it into the single chanel slot wich is closer to the hard drive. I turned on my computer and started benchmarking it. No problems at all everythin ran great.
3dmark03 8560,
3dmark05 3347

NFSU2 doesnt crush anymore eather. also performence in Farcry went up 15%. So I am happy now. If you have problems with runnig benchmarks try to turn on "fixed aspect ratio scaling" and relocate your computer memory. It worked with me.
