ibm is known for reliability and functionality. i wouldnt mind the design b/c it's a signature of IBM. if i have 3 grand + i would get an IBM hands down

yeah, nearly the exact same design as my IBM 760L.

I like how its easy to open and replace stuff.... just lift up the keyboard by pushing two tabs.

In my opinion, for what its worth, I think IBM decided deliberately to bias its investment in its resources in producing high quality, long product line, functional laptops, particularly aimed at different business users. It hasn't biased it's resources into building a better looking product, with glowing neon lights, flowing lines, smooth curves, silvery shiny colours etc, all of which appeals to the consumer market. So if some of you feel that the IBM is ugly, well fine, it could be true, but be prepared to accept that a great many people feel otherwise. I like the fact that its understated, quiet, and plain in its design. I think it will be a veritable disaster if all laptops became red, blue, white, pink, all the colours of the rainbow. I dont want to be part of the 'look at me' crowd.

If I had the budget, IBM would be my choice without a doubt. They simply make the best performing laptops and give it the best support of any vendor. I just hope that Lenovo continue with the good performance of the past, in the years ahead.

Thank You IBM

Well, that's what I like the most about IBM's 'pads... Their extremely serious looks... along with the quality.

I just love them. I love them, I love them, I love them, I love them, I love them

And you may call it as you like, rip off or whatever, I can't care less...

Congrats!

I have to say, I find the IBMs the best-looking laptops out there! It has a superbly 'old console' early-90's feel - enhanced by the old-school RGB IBM logo - that I totally love. I'd buy a T42 right now if I could afford it. Honestly, I can't stand the shiny-shiny 'steal me' look of most new laptops today, but that's just me...

Thinkpads are timelessly elegent. Other computer makers that constantly change their product lines appearance are wasting engineering resources on mere cosmetics.

Besides, giving a plastic notebook a metallic color is just so much deception (or rather, false imitation of Apple--Powerbooks are cool, but they have REAL metal cases).

On something like aesthetics, opinions will always run the gamut. But to me, ThinkPads are computers that look pretty plain in pictures but once you've felt one and used one, you begin to appreciate the unmatched craftsmanship and the high quality materials used to build one. Everything just feels so solid and well put together. There's no creakiness or shoddiness. You can tell just by picking one up from the table. Just my opinion, anyhow.

the T42 is a wonderful piece of laptop..

as compared to the laptops that my uni frens are using, it has the most solid-built..

the only bad part is the there's no Firewire for my iPod cos i wanna free-up 1 USB port.

and i regretted not getting the models with the ATI Mobilty 9600.. mine is the one with ATI Mobilty 7500 and the XGA screen at 1024x768 is a bit too small for my liking... but no biggies...

they are great looking imho.. and i have an s260 generally considered to be "Attractive" if i could have goten a thinkpad that had decent specs in the t series for 1699 i woul dhave.. but i couldn't

there is great value in the ibm series for business users.. for home i can't justify it.

their support is unequalled.

I would trade rock solid relieability, long term resale value, and excellent warranty over "prettiness".

Talking about nice design, hey I am an architect and know a little on the issue, so believe me Thinkpad´s design is extraordinary. It´s casa has a durability and endurance look, the magnesium and polycarbon fibres it´s made are enough arguments to rely on its endurance. Now take a look at its keyboard, the neatest design I´ve ever seen in any laptop. It´s all about functionality, size, color, localization, key travel... don´t worry it all mekes it nice!

Nice pics!

I think IBM's are all function over form (pure substance but no flash). Some people prefer very durable and reliable notebooks. It's a different design IMO, but I myself prefer IBM to take a different approach and build something along the lines of Sony's VAIO BX series...

I would buy one of these because of the design, it has been proven to be durable, resiliant and lasting. But changes in design would probably get IBM a bigger market segment.

anyone have a good example on the screen quality of these notebooks, ie: the backlight quality, looking for a ibm with black blacks, i dont mind "some" leakage but current laptops where the whole bottom half is illuminated is unacceptable to me. Just looking for a good screen with black blacks all around, oh and a fairly quiet fan that doesnt turn on and off every 2 seconds .

Exactly what was on my mind while reading opinions of its bad look. I had only seen one in pictures and I never liked their looks, but decided to get one because it simply was the best in terms of reliability. Later walking down the coridor, I saw a neat black laptop on the floor besides some other electronics with its metal hinges and IBM logo stickin out and I was so delighted at its thin 1" form factor. Later, when I received mine.. WoW!!!.. the thing oozes elegance like none other. In person, the laptop looks so much more beautiful and in my opinion, one of the most beautiful one out there.

when I take my IBM to school and place it alongside other flashy HP dv1000, Dell 630m, Gateways etc. it stands apart with sheer elegance and gets the most attention and inquisitive questions like - whats the red thing between the keyboard. When I say that its way better than the touchpad, the look I get is always dis-belief. Well.. you really have to use one to actually know it.

Finally, what really sets the IBM apart is its ThinkVantage tools. Man.. they just are too good and I am afraid Lenovo may not able to invent like the BigB.
