Acer Aspire 1520 Series

I have been looking for one of these A64 LTs with a 15.4" display.

But in all of the US shops and sites, they only have the 15" XGA or SXGA versions; but all of the European sites apparantly have the WXGA version.

Does Acer just refuse to sell the widescreen version in the US? Or would they offer it here later?

Well, here comes a bunch of speculation, heh.

I doubt they'll be introducing those other 1520 models in the U.S. Acer, along with everyone else in the laptop manufacturing business, is probably up to their hair roots trying to keep a handle on all the changes that have hit relatively suddenly. They're not going to want to introduce an older line into the U.S. right when everyone else is bringing in new machines with new features.

For example, the demand is now for the lower powered CPUs in thin-and-lights but with a simutaneous growing demand for DTRs. Talk about being pulled in two directions, heh. Then there is the change in the PCI bus to PCI-E which is a really big deal. In addition, there is the upcoming changes to the whole portable power supply/storage components: Fuel cell/battery combinations probably coming out
this year too. Add into this mix the new memory modules, latest LCD technologies, etc. and you have to wonder how they manage to decide what to produce from one quarter to the next over the next year or so. This many changes happening all at once is kinda cool for the consumer but hell for the designers/manufacturers.

All in all, pretty interesting for the upcoming year. Short answer: Don't hold your breath waiting for that particular model to show up in the U.S. Maybe it will happen, but I kinda doubt it. Look for its successor in the next couple of months.
