Asus M6N with just DVD/DC-RW ?

Is that an option ? I've heard that the DVD-R sucks, and already have a DVD-R I can put on an external enclosure. Don't care about the weight much, I won't travel with it anyway. So I'd like to save a few bucks on that...

do you mean a DVD-ROM/CD-RW? As far as I know that has always been an option, the standard one, maybe certain resellers don't offer it so that they can sell you the more expensive DVD+/-RW. Personally I think it will make the laptop last a few extra years if it has a DVD burner, though it be a slow one...

Yep, changed the title. The thing is, I'm already a bit stretched for money here, and I'd like to save some money in order to get a better CPU or HD.

i've never seen a reseller not offer that option(the DVD/CD-RW), and believe me, i went through a lot of reseller sites before i just built my own. i have an external one that does just fine. for the crappy specs (2x burning) of the asus/toshiba dvd-r drive, i could buy several good external burners with cases.

Here Here
Said the same thing to a friend who just got themself a Toshiba laptop...
1) they already have CD/DVD-Rom and DVD burners in USB or Firewire housing told them to get just a DVD-Rom or DVD-Rom/CDR drive. But no they wanted the DVD burner in their laptop and as it is they short on the $$$. Anyway long story come short they are well pi**ed off as the 2x laptop burner takes a day of Sundays to burn let along rip....
As we say "Who Can't Hear Must Have To Feel".
And now their spending yet more monies on a 16x with DL and a new housing

Unfortunately the resellers in europe sell complete packages, and because I want the 2.0 GHz Dothan it comes full spec-ed with the DL DVD-RW, which I don't want.

As I've read already in this forum, do I plan to burn DVD's on the move and on battery ? Nah. Maybe I could sell it on ebay or something and get a plain DVD/CD-RW ? I'm not too comfortable though with that.

I'm planning to buy from notebook-shop.de , they offer some customization but not that much.

Is there any way I could get a barebone in Europe and build it myself ?

You get a DUAL LAYER DVD RW!?!?!? That's pretty sweet actually. The last time I looked, here in the states the only option was some outdated toshiba that burned most things at 1x, and was generally crap in terms of specs. What are the specs on this one?

It says 8x DVD. I think it writes DL DVD at 2.4x. I don't know about CD-Rs.
