Help Selecting a good laptop Case

People,
I just recently received my 5660, loaded to the max. 2.8, 15.7 Uxga, 512mg, 40gig 5400, 8xdvd cdrw, 64mg 9000 Ati and so far I am having alot of fun. I am a gamer and make sure I have the desktop hardware to provide the ultimate gaming experience. That is why I bought this. Would others agree that the Sager 5660 is the ultimate gaming rig? I hope so, as I have done my research and passed on the Dell 8200 and others for this one. But as I am new to laptop gaming, I hope others more familiar can help me get acquainted with it. Should I receive the same experience with this laptop as I do my desktop system? 1.7p4, 512 rdram pc800, 80gig ata100 7200rpm, Hercules Nvidia 3 Ti 200 64mg on a Sony GDM-500 21inch monitor. I know their will be some differences but what should I expect? Also, anyone else owning a 5660 can, I hope, help me decide on a very good, protective laptop case. The one they send with it, well, leaves alot to be desired as far as protection. I was thinking of a Targus with the Air protection system but am not sure it will fit. Can anyone suggest a good protective case with plenty of storage but not huge and unmanageable? Thanks alot. Oh....and 1 more thing, I purchased mine from Powernotebooks and I cannot say enough good things about my experience dealing with them. They are a class act and number 1 in customer service. Thanks again and happy holidays.

I second the request for recommendations on a good case. I spent a couple of hours at my local CompUSA tonight looking for one, but all they had were too small. They did have a couple of backpack styles that may have fit, but there wasn't much padding in them. I will keep looking, but someone must have already been down this road. Give us some pointers!

Many thanks,
Martin Parrott

The targus backpacks are a great choice! I got the standard blue and it rocks!, i'll try to finish my 8886 review tonight so you can see all the pictures i got from it, including the laptop in the case.

Speaking of Powernotebooks, they have some good cases. http://powernotebooks.com/products.p...play_size=case

I'm trying to decide between the Majesty, Sovereign, and Duke for the 8886 With the Duke being the bigger of the three. I'm sure they fit the 5660 as well.

I was thinking of getting this hardshell case with wheels for airtravel:

a few things...

lsd, I really think you're CRAZY to check your lappy when you travel. People are just looking to jack a case
like that--so make sure you're not late to the baggage claim. Then again, the 8886 is a beast and I can see why you wouldn't want to lug it around.

Don't buy a cheap leather-looking case under any circumstances. I've got the Targus Deluxe backpack and I don't believe there is a more well-made case out there. I think PCTorque would agree. I can't say I'd buy any of the bags they sell at powernotebooks.com. They just don't look all that well-made from the pictures. (FYI, I think very highly of themas a vendor; I bought my 8886 from them and they handled the return of this P.O.S. port replicator I bought quite well.)

For those looking for a suitcase-style case for the 8886 (or the 5660 for that matter), think hard abou that one. Lugging that thing around an airbort is going to get really tiring. I've done it w/ the backpack and suitcase-style one (w/ a shoulderstrap) and DEFINITELY prefer the backpack. The Targus doesn't really go w/ a suit, but it does have a cool, hiker-ish look.

I believe www.pctorque.com sells the targus deluxe backpack. I found a slightly better deal from www.techonweb.com, but that may have been a special. I think I got mine for $65, plus about 7 shipping. Can't go wrong w/ that one; you WON'T be dissapointed.

I feel like I've given this same advice about 5 times now. Someone like beebster (now a moderator; congrats) ought to make a sticky thread containing all the links to cases people have been using for the 5660 and the 8886.

Thanks for the advice....and I agree, there should be a link to cases that people have had success with. Could steer us that are having a problem finding one that suits us in a different direction. I prefer a regular briefcase style. I want to be able to open the case and use the laptop without having to take it out so that rules out a backpack. Any other makers....I have seen samsonite and other manufacturers. I want something that has built in protection for the laptop...something extra in case its dropped in the case to soften the blow.

I got the 8886. I am using the Pelican 1550. Waterproof, shockproof and enough room to hold "everything else" which is a lot with this machine. Forget taking it aboard an airplane, it's big.
I agree with bbbggg. I have a friend who uses the Pelican 1600. It's huge, so don't plan on tucking this case under your arm. But he really likes the idea that he can drop his 2grand lappy and it won't shatter. Also, he doesn't think that anyone thief would suspect him of carrying a lappy in such a huge case.
B.T.W. I would never check my 8886, Its going on the plane with me. I just
like the case with wheels because I cant imagine carrying it too long. Plus
if I accidently drop it, there is no worries. I am considering the targus backpack as an alternative. For those who have one, how much extra stuff
can you fit?

So, am I to assume with these Pelican cases, that you cut out foam for what you need or is it something different? And it hold alot? I have a 2 grand lappy as well as the car adapter, power adapter, cat 5 cable, software..etc. Will it hold all of that?

That does look sweet. I guess what I am after is protection....some kind of air protection like in the Targus or heavy foam so that god forbide I should ever drop or knock it down...there is something to absorb the impact....and I would also like to get it in the ballastic nylon covering.

If your looking for protection look at these, they offer hard or softcases and
alot fit laptops with 16" screens. A bit pricey but a valid alternative:

Just thought I'd point out the 5660 doesn't have a 15.7" screen.

Has anyone ever looked into backpack cases? I'd have a constant fear that it would fall out, but for easy transportation...

Sinestr must have deleted the post, but in response, it will not be all that different... RDRAM is much faster than DDR, but at the same time, you won't notice much of a difference there because there aren't many applications that utilize RDRAM speed yet. Besides, gaming is all DDR (graphics cards are DDR). Your system will tear up on all games... I know for a fact because I have an 8886 here that has similar configs and I have yet to see a game that it doesn't play, lol. Good luck with it!
