The notebook race is about to heat up in January. Two sources claim that is when AMD will announce their Centrino killer, or more likely a chip in the same market segment as the Centrino.

Both sources agree that Broadcom will be one of the chipset providers, maybe just for the wireless part, and maybe for a lot moremore. Either way, it won't be long now.
Finally, I can hardly wait

Since when has the inquirer been a source of computer news. Honestly you do search these days and the inquirer always seems to be on the first page.

And oh yeah thats excellent news, but i'm still waiting for my 8750 to be announced!!

Cant wait.

Good catch snore.

Unfortunately, that's about the same time that Intel will be replacing Centrino.
ii will kill Centrino. But will be owned by Alviso

DNRC= dogbert's new ruling clas.. see snorre's pic

I hope the Alviso doesn't destroy it too badly, AMD does need to make processors for thin and light notebooks

basics of the Sonoma/Alviso release:

Quote:
Alviso is basically our next-generation chipset. It's a desktop brother, the one that Louis Burns talked about yesterday, Grantsdale. It has dual-channel DDR, PCI Express*, a lot of the features you would expect. It's also has cutting-edge graphics, Azalia, which features Dolby 7.1 surround

Quote:
Sonoma includes a new Intel Pentium M processor with a faster, 533 MHz front-side bus; a new Wi-Fi component that supports the 802.11a, 802.11b and 802.11g wireless networking standards; and, a new chipset code-named "Alviso." The chipset will support third-generation graphics and enable support for devices and standards such as Direct Media Interface with improved bandwidth, TV-out, high definition audio, eight USB ports, four-port PCI Express, and up to 2GB of DDR2 memory. Alviso will also support Intel High Definition Audio with low power capabilities to reduce power consumption by allowing the processor to remain in a sleep state while audio activity is happening.

so, what exactly is AMD planning? I really do hope there is an AMD64 equivalent.
Even more importantly, Snorre is finally admitting (in a round-about way) that current Centrino laptops are better than current AMD64 laptops. He's coming out of denial! Admitting your problem is the first step to recovery!

It's all in good fun, of course.

Wasn't that site that appeared here in some thread? Wasn't it talking about the hyper-extra-technological-advance of the Go-L (something about multiple monitors) ?

Huh? I don't admit squat

Today's Centrino package consist mostly of ancient technology, and it's about time AMD came up with a better bundle. I'm guessing AMD, Broadcom and possibly VIA/ATI/NVIDIA co-operates on a new complete package offered to ODM's in January. I expect it to be very competitive with Intel's upcoming Sonoma/Alviso platform in every way, although any details remains yet to be known.
Considering the Inquirer calls Centrino a chip, i wouldn't go too far quoting them.

Unknown package, unknown details, yet it will be competitive "in every way"? How do you know it will be competitive "in every way" if you have no details?

Come back with some details, so we can at least do some comparing with stats, not conjecture.

Did you just forget the post that showed the Pentium M at 1.8 GHz running exactly on par with a AMD 3000+??? It sounds like you're trying to justify your purchase
post #17 of 368
"better bundle"... so then you are saying that what AMD offers right now in that area, isnt already better?

Well, we'll see when we know the details. I've yet to see *ANY* Pentium M 1.8GHz notebook comparing to the Acer Ferrari 3200 with Athlon 64 2800+ (1.8GHz) performance wise, so don't get me started on that one.

AMD dosen't offer any complete notebook bundle today, only mobile CPU's and the ODM's must thus put together their own "package" if you know what I mean. Today there dosen't exist an alternative to Intel's Centrino package, but that will change in January according to this story.
SO then they currently dont offer anything better.
