Here is an awesome article on Lithium-Ion batteries.

Basically disconnecting when on AC Power is good. Store at 40% charge. Keep it cool. Full discharge every 30 cycles, I say once a month.

Worst Case for battery Full Charge - High Heat. Our buddies in Iraq. Never store fully Discharged.

Short battery life in a laptop is mainly caused by heat rather than charge/discharge patterns.

Take aways : Keep your battery in a clean ziplock bag until needed. When in use keep as cool as possible, ventilation. Never store fully discharged.

I see not reason to risk it. I personally have had a laptop for 3+ years and travel quite often and can count on both hands the number of times I really used the battery.

I would keep mine at 40% but I have the Dell I8600 and without the battery in, one of the "feet" would be missing so it wouldn't sit level. Is there anyway to tell it to not charge the battery?

Not really. The charging is not the main loss of life. It is the Heat. There was a thread earlier of rubber feet at radio shack and stacking them.

Like one it the front and stack two in the back. This creates circulation. Is this an option for you.
