I like this website: http://www.theeldergeek.com/xp_pro_i..._-_graphic.htm

you can also select text version by clicking on the clean install windows xp pro text version on the left side of the screen.

you may also want to slipstream SP2 into windows xp pro (if it isn't already sp2) by creating a disc. the website also shows you how to do that.

if you are clean installing on 700m, just know that windows xp will not pick up the following devices: integrated graphics, intel wireless, LAN, modem, soundcard, and SD slot.

it will pick up the rest, but there are a few updates to the drivers you have on your resource disc listed on Dell's website. there is also the other software. just choose what you need. then after you've installed all those drivers windows update will pick show new driver for the modem and I think the LAN.

you can always just update the files from dell after you install from resource disc, but I always like to just install one thing. The one thing you will have to do though is install the LAN driver to connect to the internet unless you download all the files onto a separate disc first.

there is a windows xp speedstep fix which i installed, but i don't know if it is doing anything. You may also want to download speedswitchxp which i've found improves battery performance as well as allows you to configure power resources.

hope this helps.

What do you think XP Pro will add that XP Home lacks?

Pro vs. Home

I'm curious too. I've got Pro on my desktop, but opted to go with Home for the 700m I just ordered. I'm basically going to surf the web, check my e-mail and watch DVD's while I travel, so what's missing?

What about corporate edition?

Off the top of my head here are some things that are in Pro that Home doesn't have:

domain networking ability
file-system encryption support
something is missing concerning remote desktop, not really sure what
file-level access controls
some of the administrative tools like the disk manager I believe

Honestly, for my purposes, I don't think I'll miss any of that.

Heck, I don't even KNOW what half of that means! LOL

I didn't think I needed windows XP pro...

But I messed up my computer pretty bad once and needed to reinstall windows, and it was a nightmare because of the terrible file access problems windows XP home has.

So anyway, right now, half of my files from the documents and settings portion of the first install I did are of the "access is denied." Variety. And everything that I looked for to fix the problem is Windows XP pro related.

...So my next laptop is gonna be Linux based
