My dell 8500 froze the other day, I shut my computer down and went to re-boot, and every time I have attempted a re-boot the power comes on, the LCD for the caps lock blinks, then it shuts down. Please help me, what happend to my computer?

I had this happen on an HP a while back. I had a RAM slot go bad (probably from overheating). When I was troubleshooting, I moved a "good" stick to the 2nd position. When the "primary" slot was either empty or had a dead stick, the computer would turn on (with LED active), but just sit there, fans running, but never boot.

You may want to try swapping the sticks 1->2 and 2->1 and try that. If it boots up, you most likely have a bad stick.

Good Luck!

Thanks, I've already tired replacing the ram and it didn't help at all, the fans don;t even turn on when I try to power it up and when the ram is removed the caps lock and the led to the right of it are both solid when I try to boot up.

It seems the 9600PT (GPU) was the culprit for us 8600 owners... it might be the case with your machine as well. If you're still under warranty, send it back to Dell... otherwise you might be looking at a GPU replacement.

How many times does it blink?

Ok Im not sure what 10 blinks means but have you tried reseating the video, modem, mini pci card(wireless) memory and CDRom? I am going to NY I will see If my friend at IBM still does Dell work and have him try to find the code for 10 blinks.

Thanks to all who contributed to this thread which I found via a google search. I had this exact problem (although I would say it as 9 blinks, not 10). I had two DIMMS in my 8500, the default one from Dell, and a 512 from 4allmemory.com. Removing the 512 solved the problem. Whew!!! Now let's see if 4allmemory will replace the DIMM!

I had this exact problem on my i8600 a while back. It too was a faulty RAM stick. I have 2x 512Mb sticks and I tried the machine with one of my sisters 256MB sticks and it booted, one of my 512Mb sticks worked but the other caused the system not to boot.

Hello. my 8500 gave some sort of error message about module D (I didn’t see it, kid did) and then froze up. Upon re-start I am experiencing the same 3 green lights on for 3 sec. then power down. So here's what I did...

I removed the memory, power fan thing (not sure it it’s the entire power supply), hard drive, and CD drive. I cleaned everything and put it back in...it worked. BUT, after leaving the laptop on for an hour it locked up again. Tried to re-start and same 3 sec. 3 green lights and wham..no start up, no fan etc. I did the same thing again but this time one at a time. No luck. So now I’m ready to chuck it but I strip everything off one last time. Put it all back on and bamb, it works. I’m guessing it will lock up again but so far so good.

Any way for me to find out what that error message was this morning my kid saw b4 all this started? And does this sound like a new laptop or fixable buy a non teckie.

Next day

The error message came back, "you have inserted a module into the D bay attached to your docking station. But this model is not supported by the D bay. The module will not be functional if left in place. You should remove it now."

I don't know what a module into the D bay is, nor do I know what a docking station is. ???

Thanks
