I'm also experiencing the same d-bay error message, freeze-ups, and random shutdowns.

The only way I can keep it running is by gently twisting the case near the lower-left part of the keyboard. This is the general area where the audio ports and hard drive are located.

My Inspiron 8500 is old and pretty beat up. When I put pressure on the laptop and twist it slightly in this area, I can hear and feel the plastic case and components inside shifting. There are small creaks and pops as the plastic bends. Usually performing this maneuver results in the laptop un-freezing.

But the problem has become quite bad. I have reached the point where I now prop the laptop up slightly with something underneath the audio ports, and place the heaviest small object I can find on top of the case, just below the left side of the keyboard. This added weight and pressure seems to help keep the laptop from freezing.

I'm no hardware expert, but this indicates to me that it is possible something is loose or malfunctioning in the area of the sound card, hard drive, or nearby components.

Also, occasionally when the laptop freezes up, I will hear a "beep". If I am able to un-freeze the laptop by twisting it as described above, the keyboard no longer works. I have to reboot to be able to type again.

Anyone with suggestions or ideas?

Over the five years I've owned this 8500 I've had the motherboard replaced twice, and many other components have failed and had to be replaced as well. Generally I'm pretty disappointed with all the trouble I've had with this 8500 over the years. So I just ordered a new laptop from HP hoping it won't cause me as much pain. I'm not desperate to get this one fixed. But it would be nice.
