Half-Life 2 on Radeon 9700 lappies?

Thread Starter
Anybody played Half-Life 2 on their laptop yet? I don't play alot of FPS games but I loved the first Half-Life and want to buy it. Will this game run OK this laptop - ASUS M6N with ATI's 9700 64mb VRAM.

I've played it on my laptop. I've got a 128MB 9600 Pro Turbo, so it might run a bit worse on a 64MB 9700, but you shouldn't have any problems.

I can play HL2 at 1280x800 at medium detail and higher with no problem. I haven't taken the time to push it yet or optimize settings. The GPU on this Asus can be overclocked well also, based on many people's experiences. It looks absolutely amazing. People come by and are floored by the graphics.

one of my friends (member of these forums...viper something...) ran (and beat) the game on his lappy, and it ran on high pretty well. his spec is 5400rpm hdd, 1gb pc2700, ati 9700 128mb P4 3.2

no problems here

Highest settings, no AA, no AF.

Card clocked to 485/285.

Running at around 60-130(when looking at a wall) constantly.

what driver versions (/mods) did you guys use?
Standard Dell driver. I tried the Omegas at one point, but they actually made my laptop slower (I probably didn't install it correctly), but the factory driver is just more polished.

i play at 1024x768 with all settings on high and 6x AA and get 60 frames all the time. same thing for CS: Source. only problem is on a few places in HL2 and maps like Dust 2 where there is lots of fog, then frames drop pretty low, so you may have to turn off the AA at that point.

Runs Very good 1024x768 unmodified game settings, but i did tweak my 258KA first. I just followed one of those guides for better performance off one of the hl2 sights... Ive also beaten the game alread!

What???? You can run 6xAA on a 128 mb mobilty 9700? Are you sure you didn't mean AF?

AA absolutely rapes graphics cards.

I have a CL56 as well (1.8 not 2.0 ghz) and I run 1024x768 all details on high 2xAF

I run it at 1280x800 @ 25-125fps.Unfortunatly I found a point about halfwy tru the game that crashes to desktop...

im positive, if by rape you mean i occasionally drop to 35-40 fps but only when looking at certain things, then yeah

That sounds odd, I don't think the 9700 mobile should be able to pull that off It's generally not that great with AA.

Source Engine has extremely high fps on a 9700M. I get 100 fps at 1024x786 medium in CSS.

1024x786 medium quality on my ferrari, runs extremely fine....except u have to plug the ferrari to the power, otherwise it's gonna run extremely slow on batteries... some AMD feature, dunno

HL2 single player, 1024x768, 0xAA 0xAF, highest quality DX9 settings, I get 40FPS average, very playable. I play at 800x600 though just for the extra speed.

CS:Source runs pretty crappy however. I run it on high quality settings, because reducing them doesn't help. However, I have reduced CS:Source to DX 8.1 for a nice speed boost; at DX9 it's unplayable.

I don't know why HL2 runs so well but CS:Source runs so poorly. I'm hoping valve will release a patch to fix whatever is wong.
