EverQuest 2 and Driver issues (3790)

Allo,

Well, I've been struggling with this for a couple weeks and finally, I'm going to throw this up in the air. I'm having some serious "blue screen" problems with EQ2 and my Sager 3790. It will run into an error and end EQ2, sometimes will blue screen and do a physical memory dump (the errors there are usually different. I must have gotten 10 different errors, ranging from ati driver files to IRQL_NOT_LESS_THAN_OR_EQUAL (or something like that), corrupt file lists, there's so many I stopped remembering them). After the physical memory dump and restart, it will say windows recovered from a serious error. A lot of these errors were things I found on other threads when doing a search for "memory dump". But those were under the 98** and 47** series. I haven't been able to find anything with the same errors on a 3790, and the threads I did read about the other models were likely to say it was a RAM problem.

For a while, I was worried that the 3790 just couldn't run EQ2, but my boyfriend insists that it must, else it wouldn't even start up. I've reformatted quite a few times, doing things in different order, trying different video drivers (the Omega drivers tend to make my screen go black, or flicker black. It'll be fine until I either update to SP2 or I try to run EQ2) and am currently using the ATI drivers on the Sager tech site. I'm not sure how to update the bios, all I can do is go into the Chipset Configuration.

I'm not sure what to do, I'm at my wits end. I can't even say if it's just EQ2 or not, but I think it is. Some other things error outside of EQ2, but as of now, I'm using it mainly for EQ2 so I can't really say. Has anyone else played EQ2 with no problems on a 3790? What drivers should I use? Ahh! Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks much!

lol, well obviously no one is going to reply to this, but in the last couple days, I've been keeping track of the error messages, so I figured I could at least add that to this thread.

PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA; ati3duag.dll
PFN_LIST_CORRUPT
win32k.sys
IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

Alright, so those are the different messages I've gotten when the laptop bluescreens. Simple searches lead to driver conflicts. I'll be calling tech support soon, but I wanted to throw this out here to see if anyone has experienced similiar. Since no one has replied, I'll assume my problem is unique and curse you lucky bastards *grin*

Have you did a reformat reinstall everything? Including windows..following sager's guide and installing everything in the correct order?

Yes. I've tried several variations of installation order. I've tried not using SP2. I've tried three different verisons of the omega drivers and two different versions of the ATI drivers on their site. I've followed the manual steps as well. Only thing I haven't done is test the hardware itself. I was hoping to get someone that has a Sager 3790 to say "Yes, Everquest 2 runs perfectly on my computer" so I won't give up hope on it.

I hope it runs perfectly as I'm playing on the crushbone server right now and plan to continue my game time on a 3790 in the future O_O

*edit* (just so you know I don't have the 3790 ... yet
post #6 of 19
The 5690 can run it..so the 3790 should have no problems running it either..call tech support you may have to get a RMA on the unit..

everquest 2 runs perfectly on my 3790. Been playing on it since the first week it came out.

Thank you for your replies, guys and gal. I appreciate it. I'm glad that it's not that the system can't run it well and that it's just my bad luck. I'll give tech support a ring.

Thanks again and Happy Holidays!

To get EQ2 to run correctly and most efficiently-

1) upgrade to the 4.12b drivers

I suggest the DNA drivers. You can get them at www.guru3d.com. I love the Omega ones, but the .12betas are just so much faster, and EQ2 demands some power.

2) Install the drivers. Reboot as requested.

3) Goto driver settings under Display Properties. Goto Advanced. Goto troubleshooting tab. UNCHECK "Enable Write Combining."

4) you'll have to reboot again...

I've seen this fix every computer I've tried it on that had ATI cards. Hope it works for you.

Oh, btw, I myself have an 8970 with a 9700 mobility, and EQ2 runs pretty darn well at 1680x1050 after doing this....

Hopes it helps her Fleon.. Xynetha let us know if it worked..

Thanks for the suggestion, Fleon!

Unfortunately, it didn't work. I tried both the .11 and .12b. Same errors. Though, when I tried the Omega drivers, the screen would flicker black after it loaded the desktop. And most of the other drivers I've tried wouldn't even run EQ2 (either from patch or play). So this is up there with the ATI drivers on the Sager site -- they at least run EQ2, though they blue screen. (I forgot to mention in the first post that one of the drivers I tried was the DriverHeaven mod.) Considering all that I've tried, I'm thinking that I'm eliminating driver problems and am leaning towards a hardware problem. So back to giving tech support a ring. Will keep ya posted.

Thanks for your suggestions! Keep them coming if you've got something different to try.

Give this a try and test your memory..maybe you have a bad stick of ram.. http://www.memtest86.com/
post #13 of 19
Or if you haven't tried, test one stick at a time and see if you can run the game..

Similar problem from a similarly equipped Compal CL56

I, too, have struggled with Xynetha's problem. Playing EQ2, after a honeymoon period, my computer would create a dumplog on restart and occasionally on restart the screen would not initiate but turn white. When EQ2, often within 2 minutes and before a heating problem would occur, the crash is HARD, requiring a full powerdown. I temporarily fixed the problem by uninstalling SP2 and then reinstalling DirectX 9.0c independently. This fix worked for awhile but then a crash situation recurred. I made the computer stable again by reinstalling DirectX 9.0c. I am uncertain whether EQ2 causes the initial bug or not -- as the problem didn't start until I had successfully played EQ2 and then restarted the computer. I can say, though, that once the crashes occur, DXDIAG often will show DirectX errors on Direct3D tests AND other sophisticated games like Morrowind will crash as well.

Bottom line: After DirectX 9.0c issues are hammered out by reinstallation, the system will run solidly in 3d for HOURS and never crash. It is only on reboot that some sort of problem emerges.

Does anybody have suggestions for sophisticated hardware tests? Does anyone have an idea for why DirectX 9.0c would get corrupted? I have run Microscope and tested the memory of both the videocard and the ram. I am afraid that, if I return the computer for testing, that they will just send it back.

Sounds like overheating problems with your video card. I don't have my lappy here with me but if there is a clock speed function in display properties try underclocking your video card.

If EQ2 doesn't utilize the gpu properly..it will over work the cpu like crazy...learned this from my desktop.. but they have centrino's.. the 3790 has active cooling..would it still be over heating?

While I dont have the same model as you do (I have the 9860). I could not get into EQ2 w/o the system freezing up and or rebooting. Shortly after I also had random drops of files (driver for sound and cd rom gone upon startup at times). I spoke with Sager Tech support (worked with guy named Daniel). He walked me through everything from reloading all the drivers, direct x, sp2, firewalls, virus protectors, disable sound cards, (you name it I think we did it) all the way to reformatting my entire hard drive. Nothing would fix it. He set me up with an RMA and shipped out brand new 9860 2nd day air (no cost to me). It arrived yesterday, I loaded in everything I had in the old pc (which was only 2 weeks old) and everything is running GREAT !!

It could of been many things I guess from talking with him (possibly bad ram, hard drive, graphics card). In any case he worked with me over the phone trying to see if it could be fixed on my end before the RMA.

Just wanted to throw this out there that it may not be anything you've done on your end especially if you've tried everything you can think of including what others have brought up.

Again I've only had the new machine since yesterday but its screaming and running everything I have loaded on it w/o any problems so far. I even play EQ2 on my 9860 while home (over my desktop) because of the great performace. Hope it all works out

Hello! I just wanted to update and end this thread. It's been busy with finals and holidays, and I wanted my next post to be good news, and not leaving you hanging.

The Thursday after I had last post, we called techsupport at PCTorque, and after going through with him (yep, did that, yep, did that, yep did that), he said it must be a hardware problem then. We had hoped that perhaps the guys at PCTorque had heard about this problem before, but it was time to go to Sager. We told them about the problem and they suggested an RMA for the RAM (no hassles about getting it fixed, I'd like to add). We spoke to Sager on Friday, the RAM got to me on Tuesday. So, they tested out some RAM with EQ2 before they sent it over to me... and it's been running beautifully for almost a week now. I've logged on at least half a dozen times, I've run through my normal reformat/install routine. No errors, no crashing, it's working beautifully and now that that frustration is over, I can finally appreciate how beautiful this machine is. The keyboard is nice and quiet, the screen is lovely, and it runs EQ2 great! I'm incredibly happy, and I'm not even jealous of my boyfriends 9860 because even though I'm a little weighed down with this laptop and my books, HIS laptop is a monster! Mine is light and convenient compared to him *grin*

Thanks for listening to my story, thanks for the suggestions, and thankfully it ended well. Anyhow, Happy Holidays!
