best / smallest laptop? using IBM x31 currently

I've got my IBM X31, top of the line and love it. Only complaints are issues w/ docking/undocking (right now I have to shut down whenever I undock), and it doesn't have a built-in cd/dvd drive. This means that whenever I go somewhere I need to bring the docking station with me for the dvd drive/etc, which doubles the weight and thickness of it, therefore defeating the purpose of having an ultraportable.

So, I'm going to sell the x31 and another laptop i have and spring for the smallest laptop i can find with the best specs and built the toughest.

So far, here's where i'm at:

OQO - love the idea, hate the specs. with better specs this would win hands down

IBM T40/T41 - bigger than i want to go, but love the specs and still very portable.

sony x505 - close to perfect, but uncertain about durability. also, no onboard cd drive (not a big deal, given it's portability), but... only 512 ram?

YOU THOUGHTS PLEASE!?!?!

I need at least a gig of ram, prefer screensize of 12" or less (10" sounds great), super lightweight, and it either needs to have an onboard cd/dvd drive, or be small enough to justify a usb drive. also would like bluetooth/wireless/IEEE/whatever else possible...

If price were no issue, and the above were concerns, what would you get?!?

Welcome to the forums. Just a quick list:

I would never buy a notebook without an optical drive (???). Personally, I also think you should check the W2. The Sharp Actius is also very small and light, with an optical drive.

- Finally, I never thought about ultra-hyper-portables, but at _first glance_, I would buy the Sharp Actius.

the sharp looks nice - looks like it max's out at 512ram though...? i'm surprised that hardly any of the ultra portables can handle a gig of ram?

They are probably pretty much the same computer, just the W2 is 10" and the Y2 is 14". Also, the Y2 is SXGA (or something) and the W2 is XGA. Both have DVD/CDRW and IIRC, they also have the same connectivity features.

I don't need to say that the Y2 is something like 10% heavier.

Can't comment the durability, though.

where'd you see a W2 w/ a 10" screen? All the ones i've seen are 12". and the Y2 i saw had a 10"... that'd be great if i could get a w2 w/ a 10" screen

I'm really considering one of the Fujitsu's. I was almost decided on a 3790, when it became apparent that I might need something even lighter. That's when I really started looking at these. I'm thinking of the tablet convertible, but am still searching for more info on it's ease of use.

The BenQ was a 14" widescreen. It's Novashine, and here's a link to a thread about it...

Sorry. A misprint on Y! (just for a change. It's not the first time that this happens there. I was looking some TVs once and I saw lots of errors for some models... sorry anyway).

anybody know what type of ram the fujitsu p7010 takes? looks like it's the winner, given the amount of ram you can get and all the features... i'm just wondering if it takes the same ram as the 5000 cuz crucial.com doesn't have the 7010 listed yet
