Spyware suggestions - Page 6

Your friend is for the most part quite wrong. The biggest security vulnerability in any browser is ActiveX, which FF doesn't even have. The overwhelming majority of the nasty spyware is introduced through Firefox. A little good judgement goes a long way though. FWIW, ActiveX can be disabled. That is the only useful thing in IE though. The only reason I ever even load IE any more is to go to a site that requires ActiveX.

Unfortunately, I cant recall the link at this time, but as soon as I get it I will post.

I still use Firefox because IE takes a minimum of three times as long.

maybe this is what he was talking about?

Thankfully, buy default, Firefox doesn't allow the installation of extension from any site but it's own.

However!

If it launches itself throug a Java applet then it can completely bypass that. I had Norton block like 3 different Trojans from Java applets running in Firefox, then I turned of Java altogether. But something still got in, installed itself.

Java isn't required to get virii from webpages, regardless of browser.

Java is the least of your worries. I do almost all of my coding in Java and I can tell you from experience that Java is a very sheltered language with many build in safe guards that keep programmer from doing "anything they are not supposed to." I would worry more about script execution from Perl.

Well I'll tell ya. Tried just about everything out there at some point over the last 18 months. Without question the most powerful and effective duo I've found yet is the combo of Microsoft's own AntiSpyware Beta combined with the most awesome maleware/virus killing program on the planet......Avast 4.6 Home.....and guess what.... they are BOTH FREE.....I can virtually guarantee you that using these two with Firefox and Thunderbird and you'll remain 100% free of junk. When I loaded Avast it immediately found 4 viruses and 2 maleware that had been on my machine that Norton and Spybot didn't even notice prior. When I put on the free Microsoft AntiSpyware Beta it found 9..............yeah 9 spyware programs and files. After killing them my system has acted like new out of the box since with NO further infections. ON several occasions Avast grabbed onto and killed several maleware and virus programs that attempted to get on, but it grabbed them by the throat and vaporized them. I highly recommend both of these as the best defense....and they are totally FREE (not time limited). www.avast.com and www.microsoft.com

Is avast a resource hog? Will it slow performance?
Not at all. In fact you won't see ANY performance hit as you would with Norton. Even Spybot has a hit on speed where it seems to me that the Microsoft has NONE. ONce again i've used just about every program out there seeking the best. Never thought it would end up being free.........Believe me, once you've loaded and configured Avast for maximum protection, you won't believe it's so good and free as well..... those designers of that program got it going on.........and it delightfully updates nearly daily for virus patterns with no interaction necessary........

I already have spybot, xoftspy(great), msantispy, avg, ZA. Should I uninstall avg and ZA? How should I configure avast? It seems that that "a" on the taskbar is always scanning things taking them longer to load.
Well, Avast does NOT constantly scan. I just got ZA on the laptop my company sent me ( a Dell Latitude 505) and I am actually rather impressed with what it does as it does it well indeed. However I would not hesitate to run Avast with it side by side. I completely got rid of Spybot after getting Avast and the far superior Microsoft AntiSpyware Beta (free download). I should think that with my 2 suggestions and ZA running you would have a more secure laptop running than Fort Knox is a gold reserve location. ;-)
As for uninstalling ZA, that is up to you. ZA is good for helping keep you aware of whats in the computer trying to get out. Remove AVG and install Avast? Definately. I used to use AVG, but found a trojan that it let slip through. In my research, I found many others having similar problems with AVG's effectiveness. I switched to Avast about 6 months ago or so and couldn't be happier.

So I should get rid of MSantispy spybot and avg?

I used Microsoft Antispyware never blocked anything for me. Nothing at all, for 2 months; so I uninstalled it. Keep spybot.

I tried to fix my friends computer because it was being infested with spyware. I used spybot and msantispy. The ms actually blocked alot for him. As for me, it hasnt blocked anything either. What exactly does avast protect against besides viruses?

Get spybouncer.

Here is the link:

http://www.spybouncer.com/

It works great. It is light weight yet it sits in the background and always monitor for any spyware. Once it detects any, it will either automatically erase and let you know or slide up a window showing the spyware and ask if you want to delete it.
I get detection everyday. Spywares are everywhere folks.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. Worked with just about every antispy and antivirus program out there. You can't beat the ONE TWO punch of Avast combined with Microsofts AntiSpyware. Between the 2 of them they instantly grab onto maleware, spyware, trojans or any other suspicious junk in without letting them load. Very low resource use and seamless integration. Get RID of Norton for sure. Just use these 2 and you'll be a fast running happy camper. I love every morning when I boot up and get the popup window for Avast saying "Your virus database has been updated" right when I get ready to go to work. Sweeeeeet........

Yeah, I like Avast also.

I used the combination of Avast and spybouncer. I used Microsofts spyware before and I think it is good. However, I am trying out the spy bouncer and I like it so I uninstalled Microsoft spyware and use spy bouncer instead.
