2nd round of testing for Microsoft Anti-Spyware.
I was searching for something in the internet from my desktop machine the other day, and while I was doing that I came across a site that had an ActiveX control that would install spyware (which was obvious by the animation that took over the page after SP2 blocked it from being installed that instructed me how to let it install), and I decided to let it go through just for the fun of it, because I was a little bored.
Not too smart of an idea afterwards... That singe ActiveX installed WebRebates, MyWebSearch Toolbar, some CoolWebSearch registry keys (didn't actually install the program itself, luckily), and about 6 or 7 more spywares as well. Ad-Aware in smart scan mode (didn't go full scan mode) picked up some 200+ items, yet there was still stuff on there causing popups and stuff. So loaded up Microsoft AntiSpyware, it picked up a whole bunch more stuff in Smart Scan mode as well, and had to restart to remove them. Let it do a full scan and it picked up the last couple of traces and now it's all well again.
But now Microsoft Antispyware is loading up automatically, leaving the dumb yo-yo icon in my taskbar taking up space. Been too lazy to disable it yet with MSConfig, but there's no option in the program to disable it from doing that.
But at least now it's remembering that I had the realtime detection disabled (when the download first came available the program wouldn't remember that setting).
