Spyware suggestions - Page 4

options>settings>general and check "Hide the Microsoft AntiSpyware icon on the system tray." For some reason that doesn't work immediately, but should after a reboot. Of course the program is still loaded, just the icon in gone. In the same area under "Real-time Protection" there are also options for telling it not to load on startup.

I hate the fact that M$ won't let you prevent Anti-Spyware from loading at startup. Granted, I hate a lot of what M$ thinks is best for users, because I always want my system to work properly.
Does unchecking the load at startup boxes not keep it from booting? I haven't done it myself.
No - unchecking that box makes no difference in whether or not it runs at startup. I wound up disabling it from within msconfig.

Odd ... it may be an XP issue with the beta version. I will try it on my notebook and desktops when I get home. Unchecking the 2 startup options on it here at work (Win2k machine) kept it from loading at startup.

Indeed, same experience here. On all my XP machines, removing the startup options does nothing, but on my work 2k and my 2k machine here, removing the startup options in the program works.

One funny thing I noticed ... When running the app, it's process name is still GiantAntispywareMain.exe Lazy M$ peeps

Microsoft AntiSpyware will remain free for home users, it has been announced:

I have a feeling that M$ did something to the program that affects how it reacts under XP - possibly even specific to SP2 & the security center.

Spyware

I use Spysweeper, Spyware X-terminator, Ad-Aware and Spybot Search and Destroy. I won't use any anti-spyware software from Microsoft. Why? Because they don't innovate. If by some chance they manage to become the number one provider of Anti-spyware software and push the other makers of spy removing software out of business who's to say they won't stop innovating. It's not like they didn't do that with browser sof... oh wait. *heh*

At this moment there are no Spy removing programs that catch all spyware software. So you are better off using more than one. Just turn the monitoring on with only one so there are no conflicts.

I have alot of success with Search and Destroy. It gets everything like 99.9% of the time. Allthough its not 1-2 spyware programs I'm worried about, it's more hijacker programs that are beyond annoying.

I just realized that after reformatting my system & running Firefox with SpySweeper I GET ZERO POP-UPS! [been that way for some time now]

How about you guys? Is anyone else totally pop-up free?
I'm using firefox also, and it does block every popup and some spyware itself. After using firefox 2 weeks I've had ZERO spyware on my system.

One of the main bene fits Firfox gives for spyware protection is lack of activeX. The bulk of the nasty spyware (browser hijackers and malware, not just pop-up makers), gets loaded on users sytems from either blindly clicking "OK" on any ActiveX box that pops up or even completely disabling the prompt and auto installing. You wouldn't believe the number of people that say "Then what am I supposed to click when one of those install boxes pops up?" ActiveX was a good idea at the time, and still is for the knowing iser, but has become a security nightmare!

I'm popup free. Using IE. And spyware free...

Well, now anyway . On my desktop, did an experiment the other day before going to Idaho, letting some spyware in on purpose so I could test between Ad-Aware and Microsoft Anti-Spyware to see what one could pick up but not the other. Was spyware free before that, finished getting it all cleaned up after I got back Sunday (had to leave before I finished.)

(read: I was really bored that night)

Out of the lot I let in, GIANT Anti-Spyware picked up a lot that Ad-Aware SE missed. Hmm... Ad-Aware picked up 245 items (including cookies), and MS Anti-Spyware picked up another 100 odd items.

I let in a lot more than I expected... I got carried away ... particularly disturbing though was when I booted up on Sunday I got a message in the corner of my screen saying "Norton Antivirus is waiting for a scan of 'pI5hVV.exe'" .

But as I said I was spyware free before that, and I think spyware free again now... Will do some last checking tonight.
Yea, I stopped useing ad aware because it didn't catch alot and didn't clean any hijackers. Allthough search and destroy hasn't had any problems cleaning up hijackers or spyware.

I agree. SpySweeper is a great product, highly rated by PCWorld and well worth the $20 bucks. I also use their PopUp Washer.

well my computer got seriously infected with spyware...id run ad-aware SE and spybot and it would find them remove them...id scan right after id do that and they'd pop up again...i also ran norton, which found adware, but couldnt remove them. It did tell where they were. Which was in C:windows\system32\ My computer warned me that tampering with these could effect the comp when i went into windows, but i did it anyway. I then deleted the programs, ran the spyware programs and they didnt detect anything. Was this a bad idea?

arghh...they're still there

After hours of manually trying to remove spyware and viruses by hand in safe mode (and repairing the OS), I got my OS to at least stop bugging me. Evenually I had to reformet to truely get rid of all the spyware. bri_guy, keep that option in mind. Its what I would do, unless someone else has a better idea.

I found out some great info for anyone with spyware problems...
go to http://forums.thatcomputerguy.us/

they have you download a program called highjackthis which then runs a system log.

you then post this to the message board and an expert walks you through all the steps needed to fix your computer. And its free!!!

I ended up fixing mine so no spyware came up before i got a response from them, but they still found things that had to be removed...its a great source that will probably charge money one day...which I'd be willing to pay
