not trying to crap on your thread, but is it practical to have a dvd-rw modular?

when you burn dvds, isn't it dvd to dvd (so in that case, you'd still need a dvd in an enclosure to burn dvd-to-dvd ... if you make an image file, it's going to be 5gb space on your drive, which means you'll have to defrag/format much more often).

eh, i dont know much about the dvd burning process.. about to buy a burner for the first time.

In order to make backups of DVDs, you need to rip the dvd using a program such as DVD Shrink anyway. And after writing the image to the hard drive and burning the dvd, you can delete the image from the hard drive.

the 6500a can burn the +/-R disc, and it is a dual layer. i am not sure if it is correct at all, or i might have read it incorrectly before. dual layer supports 9.4G DVD disc.

thanks

you only need to rip the dvd when the file is too big to put on a dvd -/+ r disc though right?

taking out 5gb of space per movie sounds like no fun

I'm pretty sure that you have to rip the dvd regardless, to eliminate the copyright protection. I have to do that on my desktop even if I don't use DVD Shrink to compress the dvd. You only need 5gb for about the 10 minutes that you're ripping and burning..then you can delete it.

Ask SOMMS I believe he has that drive in his laptop. what optical drive do you have and who makes it. If its a nec you might be able to swap the cover off your existing one. Ill let you know if its possible when I get mine the 8500 has the same modular bay.

That is the $161.00 question. I just received the auto-notification from the Egg as well. I am kinda waiting to see if someone here is able to switch the bezels on these drives so the lines match the I8600's. My current dvd/cd-r/rw rom drive is a NEC so I have high hopes that they are interchangable.
my concern is how well it fits. any idea about the 8600?
Or the 700m for that matter, are they interchangable on it ?
yeah I'd love to here from someone who put one in a 700m. I know it will install with a few modifications to the back of the drive but will I have to mess with the faceplate?
the 700m would be the easiest swap. it is just the standard drive with the standard faceplate. the only thing is the bezel that is surrounding the drive. remove a couple screws, transfer the bezel, and you will be good to go. i did it to the panasonic slot loading cdrw/dvd drive i got for my 700m.

would that work for 600m without cutting the faceplate or whatsoever?

thanks
no - 600m has its own faceplate. take out your modular optical drive and inspect it. you will see that the silver flaceplate is covering the front of the drive and there is that gray/silver plastic housing around the actual drive held in by some small phillips screws. getting the housing off is easy enough, but the faceplate is a pain to get off. even when you get it off, for some reason they dont match up (i have ~10 of these modular drives ranging from a plain 24xcdrom to dvdrom to combination to a couple dvd+rw drives) and the face plates for the different types of drives dont seem to line up. i'll five it a shot though and sacrifice one of the drives and let you know.

OY! you Dullers are slooooowww! Notice how my post here, 2 months ago... http://notebookforums.com/showthread...2&page=1&pp=15
...says much of the same thing. so =P jk

but honestly, stick your head outside your own brand's forum and see what u find eh?

the thread also mentions...
"I just reconfirmed that the faceplate of the NEC DVD burners is easily removed by just slight pressure while sliding to the right as the drive faces you. Since the ND-5100A and the ND-5500A both share the same faceplate I'd expect the ND-6100/6500 to be the same. After changing the front faceplate the drive would be 100% compatible with your previous NEC drive."

the Dulls, have been using NEC for a while, the 5500 was their standard dvd-r/w drive upgrade for a while and i assume that they r using the 6500 now as it's only competitor, an 8x liteon drive, is scarce, but as to whether the dvd burner options was/is an option for the 600m i don't know.

this following thread gives an idea about how u may need to swap the adapter on your current optical drive to make it fit, same deal on my old compaq, adapter shifts the connector over 1/4".
