It doesn't feel solid as a rock like my old compaq prosignia 170 or the CL56. I wouldn't advise to carry it around in something different than a notebook case. It's not fragile feeling either.

Saturday I was working for 3,5 hours on battery (installing software and wireless / wireless on all the time) when I stopped I still had 36% of battery life left. My cpu worked full and 10% overclocked. I think this is acceptable battery life.

In US, not sure if anyone else other than Cyberpower has it for sale. I tried to email Uniwill a few times, but no response from them so far.

Can't wait to take a good look at the full features of it when I get it in a few months.

@smilepak The FS Amilo M1425 is based on the same barebone with the difference that the Ati has 128MB. I have seen the Amilo as well and it looks similar to mine. Black bezel around the LCD and silver around the keyboard

Isn't that based upon the AMD version of the ODM?

well, I found a bodyglove notebook case that would be usable with this size notebook and would probably be using that so that I wouldn't have to carry around a full notebook case w/ me when I have to take it on campus, which would not be every day. I have to get a new bag anyway since my old one is falling apart, so I'll probably shop for that with this in mind. Consdiering that I think that my mother's and brother's Dell 8600 laptops feel sturdy enough for my purposes, yet they are larger than this Uniwill and criticized as feeling like flimsy pieces of crap, I think I would be fine w/ this as long as this notebook is nearly as sturdy as or sturdier than the Dell 8600. Comments?

I am really glad that you posted that short review. I tried ordering an M6BNE last night but my credit card was maxed and the payment won't go through till tomorrow. This may or may not be a sign from God since I had previously decided for the M6 because of the reviews of the M6 series and lack of reviews for this model. But, now I am thinking I should go in this direction AGAIN. I'm a "flip flopper". The 3.5 hour battery life looks decent, expecially since you had some battery left after that and were installing things during that time. I never trust the companies selling the product, they tend to fudge the numbers a little, but it's good to know that the 4 hour battery life is pretty much true.

On a side note, I've decided that my version of hell would be having to shop for notebooks untill the end of time without ever buying one.

Anywho, sorry for another one of my needlessly long posts and thanks for the continuing info Troy. Keep us updated.

@Chanke...I use an old notebook bag (targus) which I used for my 14,1 inch notebook. And it just fits. I didnt hold the Dell. But when I compare it with Acer notebooks this one is just as sturdy. Hope this will help you. This lappy is a real desktop replacement in a package of 6Lbs.
When you underclock (SpeedswitchXP?) cpu and gpu longer battery life should be possible.

Ok here my first run of 3dmark'03 v350 (no omega driver yet).
At same time on wireless and internet dl.

Score 2886
resolution: 1280x800 32 bit
Texture filtering: optimal
Max Anisotropy: 4
Vertex Shaders: Optimal

Fan runs, system get warmer but can hold it on every spot.

@smilepak...the Amilo M1425 is with the centrino. The one I've played with had the M725 inside. On this forum I've read that the keyboard of the FS gets warm. My uniwill doesn't get a warm keyboard.

good work troy thanks for that info i've been finding it hard to get an opinion/review of someone who has used the laptop. it really helpful. what about battery life is wxga enough?
post #32 of 92
sorry i didn't see the second page, about battery
post #33 of 92
looks like a winner how is weight? and do hey offer a higher resolution screen 1280 on that large of a screen is just too large for me.
post #34 of 92
Stupid question about the video card. I am assuming that the video is dedicated and not shared since it makes a point to say that it is "VIDEO RAM" on the Uniwill site. Is this correct?

...so you have no heat issues, and the fan noise is not bothersome?

thanks for your observations, btw

@Hooligan
They also come with a 15.4" WSXGA (1680 X 1050) Display. I choose the 1280x800 because it is more comfort on my eyes. And because I came from a 14,1" with 1024x768 I already had a 30% gain on the screen. The resolution I have now is sufficient for me in doing some programing and building websites.

Weight including battery is approx. 6 Lbs. of which most is located on the back. This give a good balance when you hold it there and carry is around under yous arm. When lcd is closed the back is thicker than the front.

I'm sure it will be possible to set it on a higher resolution with the omega driver. When I have installed this driver (hopefully tonight) I will test the higher resolution and see what it looks like when not running in the native resolution. Maybe I can make a screencaputere and post it here. Someone knows how to upload pictures in here?

@Chanke
The m11 has dedicated memory of 256mb!

@Kingkone
Untill now I didn't had any heat issues at all. After some gaming and benchmarks the right handrest and the bottom where the cpu is placed get warmer. But I can lay my hand on the place at the cpu with no problems. Nothing get so hot you can't touch the spot for a long time. I wonder there is a test what is a benchmark to bring the lappy to its max in heat development? 3dmark 03 was no problem for the system.

When asking more of the CPU/GPU the fan kicks in and runs all the time. Of course you hear the fan making sound. It didnt bother me at all because I'm never in a silent surrounding. The fan doesn't produce any annoying tone either. I know it's a personal opinion whats annoying or not, but the fan noise of this system is I think average. When you use office or Internet the fan doesn't kick in. 1 remark though: my lappy runs all the time 10% overclocked. So when I start underclock (and use the speedstep) I trust the fan will run less time than at this moment. Will install SpeedswitchXP soon and test what it will do for the battery life, heat and fan.

Thx for the update on other retailers of this laptop. This barbones with the following components (priced from Newegg) will run me around $1750.00 w/shipping:

Intel P-M 1.7 Dothan
512x1 Corsair Value Ram
Seagate Momentus 100gb 5400rpm hdd
Intel Pro2200 WiFi B/G internal notebook card

I would consider getting everything from RJTech, but I need to find out what kind of ram they use, if there is a 100gb hdd option and also if they use Intel wireless cards.

I was also looking to add the NEC ND-6500A DVD-RW/DL drive, but I haven't yet found out if it will fit this laptop.

Whats out for other RAM branded than Apacher! I've read on (I think) a Dutch retailer's site that only Apacher RAM is guaranteed to work in this Barebone...probably new Bios releases will tackle this problem of other branded RAM soon. Is there a tool to get info about the brand of the RAM?

I've the NEC 8x DVD DL +/- R/RW burner in this notebook. And it works very well. All burning atemps were succesfull so far. This burner came with the system. Will look for the type burner when I come home to confirm it's the ND 6500A.
