9860, THE choice for a great gaming rig

I've been trying to analyze this for a long time. I can't stop thinking about that 9860. I want a laptop, and while this thing is humongous, it is perfection.

Right now it would blow away my desktop. about 1100 bucks in upgrades would get me about even with it.

So, my situation. I have enough cash to throw down and just buy it. And I think I may very soon after my next paycheck (have to pay some bills first.)

I guess I'll sell my desktop....not really any use for it if I have this baby.

In all honesty, if you had a crap computer and had the money for an upgrade, then this laptop is perfect.

This is my thinking:
You have a POWERFUL processor.
DDR2 RAM
One of the best graphics cards out there, even rivaling some of the new desktop cards
Flat panel monitor
Laptop portability....sort of...
Crap battery life, but enough to act as a UPS in a power outage

I can't help it....I don't know how much longer I can resist.

So...Anybody want to buy a desktop?? LOL

3.2Ghz P4 w/HT, 1 gig dual channel PC3200 DDR, ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB, 1 WD Raptor 10kRPM SATA 74 Gig.....1 Maxtor 80 gig 7200 RPM drive, Intel D875PBZLK Mobo, In a black Chieftec Dragon series case, and one of the loudest CPU fan you've EVER heard.

Don't know if I'll sell it or not....Be nice to have the cash I put into it back, but I know it would make a good christmas present.

I've got to agree... I played half-life 2 for a few hours at max setting last night and fell in love with my new laptop.

Lol...i can't imagine playing anything at Max settings.....i've never been able to do it.

I've been playing around with EQ2 a bit, tried turning up the settings. It was awesome as long as I didn't move, but it proved to be too much for the 128MB 9800 pro. I suppose it was somewhat playable, but there were too many pauses in the graphics for my taste.

I can ALMOST play UT2K4 at all max settings, but then beams and explosions start to disappear, assuming because I only have 128 megs of video memory.

At least now I'm in the mind set that I'm GOING to get it...it's just a matter of when.

Thank you all for the great reviews. They were really helpful in making my decision.

Just a note, the current 9860 GPU doesn't come close to rivaling the higher end cards available for desktops, it still gets creamed. Wanted to point this out since the 6800 go really isn't one best cards out there.

However it is a great card (obviously the best currently available for notebooks) and it is more than powerful for today’s games, on high settings no less. And with future upgrades the 9860 is going to be rocking just fine for years to come, which is all that really matters. Definitely a spectacular machine.

Fellas....I dont want to get into a bun fight here but are there some pretty big statements being made here
Eg best notebook out there ....obviously the best currently available for notebooks...etc etc
The Dell Boys who own ati9800s that bench 8300 3dmark03 and 4100 3dmark05 would beg to differ re these statements.

My reading of reviews of this graphics card show it pulling 7000 3dmark03/3000 3dmark05 points

Just some observations

fyi, those scores some of us are getting(not me, i'm not crazy) are with people running on partitions specifically for benchmarking, with a ton of windows tweaks and extreme overclocking.
Sorry Struzor.... but that is not the case....stable overclock yes.....tweaks no.

In short the cards are comparable either overclocked or at standard. Given that the ATI card is much older (4-5months) it would get my vote.

Again just an impartial observation ...

Glace, just for the future, this should be in the Sager General Section.

I'm finding that I'm currently using my 986
more than the other 4 desktops in my house. This thing is soooo fast. The only thing I really wish I had was the Turbo wireless.

That's gotta be one of the funniest things I've read in quite a while. Like Homer says, "It's funny because it's true".

Seriously, tho...grab yourself a 9860 and you'll be delighted.

The card has already been tested to have atleast a 40% performance increase over the 9800.. the Dell card stock scores around 5560 over clocked over 7k.. while the 6800 stock is 7k and could possibly hit 10k if anyone is brave enough to do it..but there is no need..it runs everything as it is.. Its still the best notebook out there for the simple fact that it will have future upgrade cards and the agp cards will not..

I got 9278 on 3dmark03
What overclocking did you do to get that score?

Isn't the just announced ATI mobile video supposed to blow the nVidia out of the water? I saw a test on one of the big hardware web sites on a pre-release ATI x800 mobile and the nVidia that's in the 9860, and the ATI gained about a 40% increase in most cases.

I'd love to have a 9860, but I'll stick with my 5680 until the ATI chip is in them. That and until I get more $$$ in the ol' bank account

P.S. would also like to see 1900x1200 screen and blue tooth. Both are available, just not in the Sager yet. Grrrrr.

That's the lovely part about this machine. We'll have the option to get the ATI card if we want it. However, Im not getting it til they come out with a 16 pipeline card.. *drools*

All that glitters...

The ATI M28 is the next mobile ATI chip. Check out these benchmarks for that bad-boy chip...

"ATI isn’t going away quietly though. The Canadian company is currently preparing a PCI Express-based successor to MOBILITY RADEON 9800 that’s also based on X800 technology but with a 12 pixel pipeline architecture codenamed M28. Our testing with a prototype M28-equipped laptop suggests that GeForce Go 6800 may not hold the performance crown for very long."

"ATI’s M28 is essentially the 12-pipe, PCI Express version of today’s MOBILITY RADEON 9800, giving end user’s ATI’s 2.0b pixel shaders, and 3Dc. ATI has also developed a 16-pipe version of M28, but this product will likely never see the light of day. ATI plans to launch M28 just in time for the holiday shopping season, so we’ll have a dedicated performance preview of this part online in the coming weeks."

ATI just announced the chip last week.

That chip even blows away the nVidia desktop chip!

Plus, I'm not sure about the 16-pipeline version. I'm hearing rumors about it being a reality, but in a year or two.
