Help! XP Pro looks like older versions!

Hello,

I was on this tweakxp.com webiste applying stuff I don't know too much about. I'm running XP Pro SP1 on my laptop and now all of sudden, after applying some tweaks, my XP won't load defualt XP themes like Blue, Silver, and Olive. Anyone know what can turn this back on? Please answer soon, because otherwise i can't stand to sit on my laptop anymore!

Thanks in advance,
Rao

Standing and sitting on a laptop is highly NOT recommended

Now - Right Click on the taskbar and you will have a properties option. Select it and customize your desktop. It will most likely be in "classic" mode - switch back to Windows XP Theme or whatever it is calle.

I am on Linux now and only vaguely remember. Will post back if you havent solved this already.

Nope, that doesn't seem to work. Anything else?

Just backtrack, we honestly have no idea what you tweaked, and you need to go back and reverse what you did before.

I changed some services, by running services.msc, the problem is, I chaned so much stuff I don't know what to do now. I could have back tracked, but the problem is that I didn't change everything the website said i needed to. Services are available in three modes, manual, automatic, and diasbled. I put most of the services on their website on manual, but don't really know which ones. I know it was a long shot asking other people to help, I should have backed up before performing such drastic functions, but as an old user of this forum, I have always found answers the easy way

Wow, not the best plan just running through and changing services you're not framiliar with. My suggestion is system restore or recovery console.

System Restore would have been the only option had I disabled a service which would have caused my system to not work correctly. I only have aesthetic problems right now.

Ah-hah! Themes services were diasbled. How obvious. Thanks for your help.

You most likely disabled the "themes" service. Re-enable it and you should be ok.

Lol, wow, it would have stumped me if you didn't say you disabled themes

Quick question about Win2003... Does it basically have the same compatibility with stuff as XP has? Also, is there any way to legitimately get it without getting it through your company? It seems thats the way many people here get it.

the best thing to do is backup your data, and reformat...

For those staying in the legal realm and wanting to use 2003, the cost of unning it goes up drasticially. Most antivirus and defragging solutions will require a "server" version to be installed on 2003. Also things like Bluetooth and Wireless Networking doesn't work as well in 2003 as it does in XP.

Lastly, MS used to be basing Longhorn off the 2003 code path. They just recently scrapped that line of code and instead started from the XP SP2 code path. If you run 2003 for the "newest windows code", well, ironicially it is in SP2 due to all the changes it made.
