For the first time in a while I have come across a computer problem that I have no idea why it is happning.

I download movie files at a friend of mines house because he has broadband, and well I don't. After I burn them onto cds, and move them to my house, I have no problems with most of them. But when I put in, and open a few of the cds, after a few seconds the screan flashes, and all windows I have open at the time close. I have tryed reburning the cd with said eposoids on it, but no dice.

I have also tryed moving them to my computer without opining the cd, but when i get them to my computer and open the file i have them in, the screen flashes agein and all windows close.

Non of the movies on the cds are illegel or are coppywriten in america. (they are epasods of a few anime series that are being aired in japan) The proble also only occures if I have the view in thumbnail mode or if i click on the movie file.

The problem is more of a "I know this shouldn't do that" kind of program since i use VideoLan to play my movie files, so I never even have to open the files the movies are in. I just want my computer to work right. Please help if you can.

It sounds like you've encountered the x-vid codec. Is the thumbnail green? If its not x-vid then its probably some other video or audio codec. Download this program if you can:

http://virtualdub.sourceforge.net/

Then open your movie in it. It might even play but its not a very good movie program. Then go to the File menu in the top left and click on file information. It will tell you what codecs it uses. Then download that codec.

I am well awar of the problems that xvid causes. That is why I use Videolan as my media player. The problem I have is not with viewing the movies, because videolan plays virtually all video files no mater what codec they use. (without downloading anything)

The problem I have is with looking at my files in the folders. As soon as the computer trys to load the thumbnail or any info on the files, it craps out and closes all open windows. I never see a thumbnail so, I dont know if it is green. (I do know that if I try to play some of the files in mindows media player there is the green screen, but that happens on my xvid files that the problem isnt happning to as well.) Besides with the xvid codec, if the green screen dose come on it dosnt come on right away, so the thumbnail would not be green anyway.

Once agein, I can watch the movies all I want, but if I try to look at them in my folders the computer poos out. Thanks for the quick responce though.

What series is it and who subbed it?

After thinking about this I remember I had a similar problem. I didn't solve it because I was only affected by it with one file. I deleated it, because I thought it might be a virus and then I ran the virus scanner, but nothing came up. So its probably something built into the movie. It might help if I know the group that subbed it. I can or you can check their webpage and see if you come up with any kind of information that might help you.

Also what opperating system are you running?

The series are, Gundam Seed (epsods 26 27 28), D.N. Angel (eps 1-5), and Ghost in the shell: Stand alone complex (eps 1 and 2). The subtitlers are Anime Junkies, Anime One, and I forget. The eps i listed are the ones on the cds that are screwing up.

It could possibly be that's its the codec that its encoded with. Try using the G Spot program to see what codec was used and grab that codec and try again.

I am runing xp. My friends computer that I download from is ME or 2000(cant remeber). The are all encoded using the xvid codec. Not all of them have this problem. Just like 4 disks out of 20. Even if I rebern thouse disks, It still happens. If I mix them up with other files, and them burn, It still hapens.

It could be a newer version of the codec. Especially with the new fansubed anime. Try downloading the newest version of the codec and installing it. Also there was a codec pack that was going around it was the nemo codec pack. It seemed to cripple some x-vid movies. If the program your using made use of that pack that could be your problem. I had that codec pack and I could play the movies in Virtualdub but not in media player. Go to your control panel and open install/uninstall. Check to see if nemo codec pack is there. If it is uninstall it. You'll have to use a different codec pack or go get them yourself. Also try downloading the newest version of your program. Uninstall your old one and install the new.

Thanks for your help Shadowhwk, and beakmyn. I fixed it, by uninstalling all the codecs that I had and only insalling the newest versions of the ones I needed. I hate codecs sooo much.
