what did u laptop owners do wit ur desktop?

Now that I have a laptop, I am kicking myself for wasting $1350 or whatever on my desktop two years ago....its specs are 17 inch flat panel (I got that last year..prior was a 15 inch flat panel)....40GB HD, 256 RAM, CDRW, XP Pro SP1. It's a Dell and I think the warranty (if its not done now) will run out next year.

I got an Acer 2012 this summer to take with me to study abroad and I love this thing! Its so much less of a pain to deal with than a desktop (mine is in storage).

When I get back to my home university, should I maybe sell my desktop and only use my laptop? I mean, my laptp has better specs than the desktop...lol. I am afraid I wont make much from it since there are desktops ten times better out there now.

Should I maybe bring it to my home and have the desktop set up in my room while I take my laptop back to university?

What did you guys do with your desktops?

I use both all the time. I use my desktop at home for everything. When I have to go somewhere else, i will use my laptop for everything, too ha. I only use my laptop for portable purposes, but your situation is different. You arent at home. If u wont use your desktop much or at all, go sell it quick before the value goes down faster than you think.

My old desktop is sitting under the dinning room table (Yes, I am not married ). Next to it is my old, old desktop. On top of them is my old, old, old desktop. My old, old, old, old desktop is sitting on the chair next to the rest. I have someone elses old, old, old desktop in the closet, I have been to lazy to take it out and put it with the others.

Anyone need a 386-DX 33 w/8MB ram and a 80 MB HD?

Once I decide on a notebook and receive it, I will most likely either give my desktop to my family who usually uses it for internet and AIM. Then, I'll probably just build a file server for my CDs and maybe DVDs. Maybe, if my internet conncetion can handle it, maybe a game server.

My desktop is used by the kids for gaming and homework. I have a working OLD Pentium 166GHz machine in the garage. My wife and I use the 2 laptops. I will not be purchasing another desktop computer. I'm hooked on the mobility of my 2 laptops.

When I got my sager 8790, I really didn't need my desktop anymore, so with some small upgrades and some recycling, I ended up building a HTPC, and I am very happy with it. Quality is awesome, its quiet, and I don't have the guilt of it going to waste.

That's a sweet idea, do you know of any guides for piecing one of those together, like hardware and software recommendations?

I use my main desktop PC 80% of the time when i'm home for Gaming, music, internet, DVD's, etc. I also have 2 other desktops that while are not in "use" most of the time, they are running Folding@home 24/7 along with my main PC. I use my laptop between classes at school and while relaxing at home on the couch (wifi rules!). My laptop, just like all my desktops, is also running F@h when it is plugged in.

I use both my laptop and my desktop at college.

My desktop is used for downloading everything, making web pages, visual basic programs, basically everything I do on the computer that is creative. It is also used to store everything I have (TV Shows, Movies, Music, Pictures, Installs, you get the idea), burn CD's, rip CD's and DVD's, and access the web when I am in my dorm.

My laptop spends most of its time in my room when I am not there, but for those late nights I have homework to do, it is a blessing. When I am away from my desktop (and close to a broadband connection not affiliated with my uni's net) it spends alot of its time downloading. All my homework is done on it, especially typing (laptop keyboards are so cool) as well as all my games too.

Both are used to check email, surf the web, play music, AIM, watch TV/Movies, and both have the tools I need to get work done (that comes in handy).

Laptop = with me at college
Desktops = at home

I threw WinVNC, and an FTP program on there. I connected it to my network, and also put dedicated servers for, now older, multiplayer games. Spent $100 on two HD's, equaling 180 GB o' space.

So basically, I have a 24/7 anywhere, anytime server.

It's not even mine, I have to give it back to the school when I graduate next semester since it's really not worth it to pay about $200 to keep the damn thing. But basically right now it's a big, bulky, expensive HDD Enclosure for my laptop.

When I get my laptop I'll be using it for mobile things obviously. While I'm at home I'll probably have it offload work from my desktop (do 3D rendering, let me do stuff online while playing games). Unless I decide to go to elsewhere in my house in which my laptop will be controlling my desktop over the network and rendering or stuff and I'll do my work/internet stuff on the laptop.

All in all both would be equally used.

Currently, i use both.

Im still configuring my desktop a bit, getting round the watercooling and modding and crap. When my desktop is offline, i use my notebook to compensate. Then sometimes, i use the notebook as a second monitor for MSN and stuff while playing fullscreen games on the desktop.

I plan to do what geejo is doing, maybe ftp or a webserver, but my desktop is uber noisy. I plan to buy a fanless psu and a fanless cpu cooler. but its 149.00 for the psu and 50 for the cpu cooler...
I need it to be uber silent, two case fans for circulation should be good

You dont really need a Fanless PSU or a Fanless CPU cooler. I would just grab an Antec Sonata case that has a 380W PSU included and a CNPS7000 series CPU cooler from Zalman then use the onboard VGA or have a passively cooled graphics card. I made one of those for my sister, except she uses an Artic Cooling VGA silencer for the graphics card. In total, there's 3 fans in her case, cept they're all slow moving ones. Coupled with the thick steel of the Antec Sonata, it's basically silent and she lives in the Western suberbs of Sydney Australia, which is very quiet at night and neither me nor her can hear it at night.

Sometimes, i think Fanless is a waste of time, just get some slow fans and that should be enough.
