@takky
nice to read your post...
can you tell us how you solved the problems with sound and display?
more important:
did you test the working usb port with an usb 1.1 device (e.g. usb mouse)?
how did you get it work?

thanks in advance

Oh, and if you install the latest omegas on this thing, it seems to not worth with the two blizzard games i tried it with, Warcraft 3 and World of Warcraft.

This is a step by step to get 3d acceleration working for Fedora Core 3.

After completing this, u need to edit the xorg.conf again and add ModeLine so you get the native resolution of the screen and not stretched.

I had problems with the USB auto-mounting my flash drive and so i configured it in the fstab myself. But the usb mouse works fine. Just plug it in it turns on and is ready to use! ^^

I wouldn't recommend the omega drivers - after you install them the tv-out won't work anymore.

Download the catalyst drivers and use this patch tool http://www.driverheaven.net/patje/

maybe it helps

I'm also looking to buy this lappy (australia) but Umart have taken it off their site, there are a couple of other places selling for a bit more, but they are different versions. It appears that the 7000 V07 is more expensive (~$200 AU) than the 7000 V03, which doesn't make sense because the v07 has a 40g HDD and a 725 processor, whereas the v03 has a 60g and 735 processor. So I are confused, anyone able to enlighten me as to the major difference I might be missing here?

I believe the v07 comes with Bluetooth integrated. Also you should becareful of the Optical Drives that come with these Notebook, some of the older versions only allow writing of +R media, the newer ones with the "SUPERMULTI Drive" allow -R writes aswell. The v03 that you saw is the new spec version that just started arriving in Australia, all the new Joybook 7000 now come with Pentium M 735 CPU's.

v07 is the september '04 manufactured ones. Its p-m 725/40gb... v03 is 735/60gb and v02 is the one with bluetooth

I have seen similarly sized 14" WXGA sold by Compaq and Sony here in the US. Probably the same generic OEM manufacturer as BenQ, but rebranded and loaded with cluttered crap software...

the compaq and hp 14" widescreen models dont have dedicated graphics, and they're heavier too ^^

Yeah the V03 is the replacement for the v07. The v02 is the new high end model. V02 is the only one with Bluetooth.

I would get a v03 if I was after one now; only downside is the XP home instead of Pro. I think the v07 is more because it is older stock and prices for components have dropped since when they were purchased by the stores.

Of course you may want to wait until April now when the new version with Sonoma comes out. It is the Joybook s72. Has a 1.6 GHz Centrino, 512Mb RAM, 60 GB HDD and an x600. The 1.6 GHz centrino is the new Sonoma one though so better performance.

On another note the benq service is very slow here in Brisbane. Mine went in for repair (was making a buzzing sound) so they had to replace the motherboard. It has been a little over 2 weeks now and the store has just got the replacement motherboard in - they ordered it from BenQ over a week ago (and I have been going into the store and enquiring/harassing them practically every day since I took it in to try to speed the process up ).

The fault itself was minor; the motherboard was making a buzzing/beeping sound that was very annoying in a quiet room. It was apparently some sort of small short circuit. Did not affect the operation of the laptop in any way.

I've also got that problem.. but it only happens when I use the remote. After I stop using it.. it keeps making a weird beeping noise..If i keep the IR reception on, the sound will go off.
That sound should've been fixed in the 2.01 BIOS release but it didnt help =(

yet because of lack of how-to available on the net. Please post the link here if you know of any how to install Linux on Benq Joybook 7000.
