Dual-Boot Config question

Hi all. I am trying to set up the main hard drive for dual-booting using XP Pro in both partitions. The drive is in ATA mode. The problem I am having is that drive letter assignment is not changing to show the boot partition as drive "C:" as I switch between the two bootable partitions. I.e, partition 1 is always "C:" whether it is the active boot partition or not. I have done this successfully with my XPC SFF computer.

I have researched this within the Microsoft knowledge base and can't figure out how to make it so that the boot partition always has the C: drive letter.

Anyone with any help on this would be appreciated!

Thanks

You can't make it work with XP pro on both unless you hide them from each other using a bootloader like systrem commander. The reason for it is XP will use the registry for both OS's on the first drive.

I actually do have this setup working successfully on my other computer without a boot manager. That is why I am wondering why it won't work on the 8790. On my other setup, I give the boot.ini file the multiboot choice and I select which one I want to log on to. The C: drive label gets applied to whichever partition is the current boot.

Thanks for the input

Appears you got lucky on the install, any time you have 2 of the same OS's on C and D and neither are hidden they will use the same registry which is a real bad thing to do. I would suggest using a boot manager that way you can control the system better.

Thanks for the input! This is all still a big learning process!

You CAN do it, but it is a pain. I currently have a set-up just as you want on my desktop and a similar one on my 9860 (only difference is I used a boot manager on the 9860). Here's a link that is helpful if you still wanna do it, http://www.goodells.net/multiboot/

Thanks for the link! Interestingly, on my desktop, the boot drive is always C: even though the other operating system partition is not hidden. I was told that this may cause a problem with the registry and there have been a few minor glitches I've noticed, but they are infrequent enough to ignore.

The reason I am trying to do this is to have to separate partitions: one a setup for music production only, i.e., without unnecessary drivers and antivirus software slowing things down and causing data transmission coflicts; the other for general tasks such as email, finance, etc.

Thanks again!
