Hey guys,

I've got an IBM T41 and an X40.. i've been playing instruments for as long as I can remember and I am a certified performer for a number of instruments - namely : piano, guitar, drums and most woodwind instruments e.g. sax, flute etc ..

I would like to move into the field of digital music on my own .. as in create my own music on the go ..hence i was wondering what i need to connect my digital piano, guitar to the laptop for composing and recording .. would i need any specific hardware software ???

You'll probably need some kind of I/O MIDI interface, probably made by Yamaha. There are some good ones you can plug via the USB port.

M-Audio make a thing called the MobilePre. It is a USB soundcard with ins and outs, and can also provide phantom power and be used as a mic preamp. Best of all it is bus powered so you don't need power.

I have one and it works very well. With this and a decent sound recording program you'd have a nice mobile setup. It's $179.

They also have another doodad called the Fast Track USB which is designed to do exactly what you asked - input guitar and vocals into a computer - for just $129.

If you have the money I would get a MOTU 828 MK2.
