mtech d464x review
First Ill review my experience with www.mtechlaptops.com
The particular model I was ordering was the Mtech d464. This is similiar to the Sager 4380/Prostar 4034 while I don't know what Clevo this is. The mtech and Prostar models were the only companies that offered the Bluetooth option. I chose Mtech for the price.
Mtechs online ordering system is quite primitive for lack of a better word. While inputing information is quite normal they do ask for you credit card cvv number. After inputing the order, the tag game begins. Immediately you first recieve a email that is an invoice of your order. This just shows the price of everything you ordered and is not a true invoice. A few days later, for me it was four, you will recieve another email. This is the important piece of email. it includes a new invoice number and information of the person handling your order. You are instructed to download efax software, which will allow you to read the attached document. Once efax is installed you, download you document which is your true invoice. Your entire information is included on this invoice! Your name and address, credit card information, and cvv number. Be very careful how and where you fax this information back. You are instructed to sign all 5 pages of the invoice which shows a breakdown of how your card will be charged. After that you wait. Four days after faxing, I recieved my laptop.
The notebook is comes packaged in a suitable padded box. Along with carrying case and software. My notebook came with a group of 4-6 stuck/dead light blue pixels. Basically it looks like one stuck pixel in the lower middle right of the lcd screen. Its annoying and unacceptable and anyone who accepts dead or stuck pixels is encouraging low industry standards. Installing everything according to the user manual is very smooth. The screen is a sxga+ screen which looks good at its 1440x1050 native setting. However, putting the resolution to more commonly viewed screens such as 1024x768 makes the screen very fuzzy. Letters and all.
The battery lasts about 1:15 to 1:30 hours with the speedstep technology. This is unacceptable considering a dvd averages 2 hours, yet there is no option for a extended battery that fits in the stock battery compartment. Another gripe is that the speed stepping cannot be changed in any way. Not even with speedswitchxp. Why? Because the bios which is a phoenix bios, that ships with the unit does not have the option to adjust the speedstepping. So when off the power cord, your processor will always be working at 2.5ghz. Possibly writing to mtech or some company along the chain will get you another bios but that is questionable. I may never know about a bios fix because i'm going to be getting a refund, which will make me out 15% or 300 bucks for my order for their restocking fee.
All in all I was mesmerized by all the features that are included with this model. but considering the the battery life of the stock battery, the dead pixels, the fuzzy view at a normal resolution, and the speedstepping I don't think I'm willing to live with this model.
