Sager 5680 problems problems problems

Hi,

I have recently had a problem with my Sager 5680. I think the problem must orginate for Everquest 2.

I have been playing Everquest 2 from the beggining with no problems what-so-ever. Actually, it ran great! Ever since the EQ2 patch on the 20th I have been experiencing loss of video and inputs. At first it would happen in about 10 min of gameplay. It got worse and now does it within the first couple minutes. After this I would need to hard boot the system. Searching on the forums I have noticed many people having the same problem. My problem is that now all my games are doing the same thing within the first couple minutes of gameplay. I have not seen anyone on the EQ2 forums having problems with other games. What I know:

1. EQ2 has a major memory leak problem. This could cause bad memory modules to be exploited. So I tested them and they passed. I also tried 1 Dimm at a time (so I don't think I have a mismatch of dimms). Though, how can I test whether or not they are mismatched?

2. I formatted and re-installed XP. Re-installed multi-video drivers, DX9.c and loading the most updated bios I could find on these forums (1.00.10S). For some reason I can't find any Bios what-so-ever on sagernotebooks.com. Am I an idiot and not looking in the right spot? I looked under the 5680 of the drivers section. Also, looked at a few other product version to see if they had any bios's. No luck.

3. Ran Scandisk on both partitions... any other way I can test if my hard drive is defective?

I am sure I left something out. I called and left a message with these questions to Sager yesterday. I haven't recieved a call back. Also, I emailed this morning so hopefully they will at least give me some info on better ways to test my hardware. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks all,

Ed

I'm not the greatest when dealing with these type of problems, but I will try to add whatever I can here.

Have you checked temperatures at all? Could be that something is overheating and causing a lock, maybe your fan ducts are clogged with dust. When you play other games, are you playing them riight after playing EQ2 or do you reboot first? Could be that the memory leak from EQ2 has filled hte memory and needs to be flushed with a reboot before playing the other game. Have you just recently upgraded your drivers, or have you had the same ones installed for a while and they worked ok?

Sorry its probably not too helpful, but I know any sort of feedback in these frustrating times is nice.

All drivers are and bios are up to date. No I am not playing right after I play EQ2. And yes I am trying right after I reboot. I mean this is after I install XP and all drivers.. then I run the game after a reboot. I did clean my fan. Can anyone recommend a program that tests cpu heat. Though I doubt this is the problem.

You can try a program called mobile meter to measure heat...http://www.geocities.co.jp/SiliconVa...310/mm0310.zip

Have you tried uninstalling EQ2 and running another game? If that solves it, just go buy World of Warcraft, much better anyway

Mobile Meter would be you best bet. Runs fine on my 5680. If you can find a copy of the Manual Fan Speed program that was made and tested on these forums a while back (can't remember the threadname), you could try running it when playing EQ2.

I have to upgrade from my pitiful 512MB RAM on mine in order to play it with any enjoyment, which I am doing today. I just hope I don't break anything.

Well.. I eventually lost all video. Can't even bootup. Sent it back to Sager (it's still under warantee) and guess what? It just came back today. Turned it on, still no video. I orignally bought Sager thinking that they had good customer support. Boy was I wrong. I have been trying to get someone to call me, just doesn't happen. They reply to my emails once in a while. When they do they are not informative at all. Waiting to recieve a reply back asking why my video still doesn't work. I am just sick of it. Sager was the biggest waste of money so far for me. Never again.

Sorry to hear you've had such a bad experience.

However, the biggest thing coming out to me right now is - have *you* tried calling *them*? Sager is, after all, a company, and may or may not have time to reply to your message in a timely manner (Although I get email responses within 48 hours on average). I certainly hope you aren't looking to Dell for a replacement offering - you'd better use your money by flushing it down the toilet (or giving it to me!). In short, I would say that, while certainly disappointing, there is likely a reason behind any errors made here. Approaching a situation calmly and with a minimum of playing "the blame game," as it were, tends to solve just about everything.

Does it boot, and no video? Or does it not boot?

I find the 5680 is a bit odd if you play with the dj buttons on the front and then try to boot. Is it possible that you may have hit the on off switch on the front taking it out of the return package? Seems very odd they would return it without having tested it--and then it begs the question why is it not working now?

Remove the battary, unplug the ac adapter, press the power button for 10 seconds. Reinsert the battary

It boots up, just no video. Tried your suggestion. No luck

Oh and by no video, I mean I never see anything. Not even the bios.l

Well, that is no good. The GPU is mounted on the motherboard and isn't really replaceable...I supposed it could have come loose, but, I doubt it...man, that is total crap when you send it in and it comes back with the same problem--and this has happened to other people, too (not many, but a few).

Very discouraging

Yeah.. it's pretty ridicules. I am just fed up at this point. Sager only does call-backs which sucks. Also, they are probably just gonna blame the LCD monitor now (since it's not under warranty). They give no info what-so-ever though.

On second thought... it can't be the LCD if hooking up an external monitor doesn't produce any video... then again, I may need to change that display option in XP again.. hmmmmmmmmm

Update:

A tech called me up. Told me to apply pressure left of the power button. After a few minutes of hoping my notebook wouldn't break video appeared. Supposedly there is a micro switch in there that gets stuck sometimes. Maybe I should start a new thread conveying this info. The other thing that is wierd is that the reset button below my LCD is missing. Oh well.. at least the video works now.
