P25-S670 Keyboard Controller Problem CTRL

I have an on-going problem that I want to share with the Toshiba laptop user base to see if I am alone here. I am experiencing intermittant keyboard input problems on a Toshiba Satellite P25-S670, where the unit is operating fine for hours then the unit reacts as if the CTRL key is pressed so all further keyboard inputs are the CTRL+character. For instance if I type a "V" in notepad, it wants to paste. A soft reboot generally rectifies the problem, although sometimes I must reboot several times before it returns to its normal state. At first the problem happened once a week, but as time goes on it becomes more pronounced and now happens a couple of times a day. Initially this problem appeared about a week after the unit was new last June, and I took it down to CompUsa depot repair to assist in diagnosis. I had already assumed it was software and had performed a re-install from the recovery CD and the problem remained. The CompUSA techs were thinking (as I) along the lines of Spyware or Virus, and they sold me SPYBOT on the spot to alloow us to proceed with the diagnosis. In the end we were able to reproduce the problem after the scan, and also in safe mode so we were confident it was a hardware failure.
I placed a service call with Toshiba and they reviewed the diagnosis, and also agreed that it appeared to be a defective keyboard controller or keyboard. I sent it in and they returned it within the week with a (suposedly) replaced keyboard and mainboard.
At this point I was confident AND problem free for months... Until mid October when the problem reared its ugly head again. Once again, and even more certain that it is software related I have been diiligently isolating services, drivers and apps to find the cause... but havent been able to nail it down. I thought I was close when the problem fstopped for three days after changing the keyboard drivers to all MS (there is one driver vthat Toshiba uses that is non-standard), but alas today it happened again. I'm going nuts on this one.... Am I alone here? Is there a flaky batch of Toshiba Keyboard Controllers?

I Am Alone

Hello,

I have a satellite SP10 and I have a similar issue.
On my PC it seems to happen less frequently than what you are describing (once a week on average).
My colleagues also have the same problem (but less frequently than me ) on the same laptop.

I have searched on Toshiba support website and found nothing related to thsi problem but it is clear to me that as the problem seems present on a lot of PC, it is most likely software related.
Maybe once they will build a patch...

Mystifying Problem

OK Mysterious CTRL Key problem continues into a new diagnostic stage. For the second time since I bought this system (Toshiba Sattellite S670 - you know the 3.2 GHZ Aircraft Carrier...) its come back from the factory (US) repair depot for the same nagging problem. Once in a while oh about 0-10 times a week, the keyboard will engage and lock the CTRL key function, requiring a reboot to disengage. Cant do much when in this mode, as even mouse clicks are affected by CTRL key. Problem has been extensivly diagnosed and problem isolated to what seems to be the keyboard controller chip integrated into the mobo. System "sometimes" requires a cold boot, remove battery and pray to disengage, but most times a restart fixes it. Have totaly restored the system from factotry CD, and recreated promlem. Uninstalled the Toshiba apps and services, such as SmartKey etc.... Problem still occurs - intermittantly. Thats the fustrating part. Sometimes the thing will go for a week and beyond without a trace of failure. So you get begin to get confident, let the external data backups lax up, then when cramming on that propposal, whammo! It Happens, Usually in succession over several days. First time the repair depot said they replaced the systemboard, and keyboard (July o4) and last week they replaced the RAM and keyboard. Its happened twice since then, and one time not only the CTRL Keyfailed but the all keyboard entry!. Oh BTW, external USB Keyboard and mouse do not affect the problem - problem is not in the keyboard mechanism. Need to figure this out before my son gets blessed with one helluva gaming machine and I go back to the Dell Inspiron! I need integrity dammit

Hello, all. I have the same problem on a Thinkpad Edge 14, Win 7 Sp1. 8 MB, with keyboard replaced once, a full checkout and install drivers that were out of date, and basically wrung the whole computer out. The problem is intermittant, but is very frustrating. I have no idea how to find out what the keyboard control chip is so as to compare it with Toshiba's chip, so I can't speak to that. Has anyone seen anything new on this? My computer is out of warranty, so I can't get any help from Lenovo.

Thanks,

Duane
