I9200 wuxga ???? - Page 13

Nick, I as you, gave the screen a shot. Some seem to not mind it. However, after three days, the holographic-type effect on light screens due to the teeny-tiny, extra thin bubblewrap; the greasy smear; the sparkle; whatever we cal it, causes me to focus off the screen with one eyeball and go crosseyed. It's going back.

I honestly don't have the "depth" effect on my screen. The light colours are sparkly, especially the whites, but not in a holographic way that makes things shift when I change angles or anything. It doesn't make my eyes focus behind the screen. I'm actually loving it.

Maybe it's cuz I'm myopic at -5.75 and wearing glasses/contacts lenses. Who knows.

p.s. it doesn't matter who the manufacturer is. Dell is one of the proponents behind the SPWG = Standard Panels Working Group, a bunch of OEMs who have created a set of LCD standards to be applied across the industry for a conformed level of quality and characteristics across the board. Any LCD manufacturer Dell chooses has to conform to the SPWG standards as well. Thus, they will all create LCDs with the same specs, more or less.

Nick, I've seen the screen in person and can say that (at least for me) it was VERY MUCH a problem and it does INDEED hinder the screen from its clarity - completely.

There is nothing minor about this problem - it hits you in the face the second the notebook is turned on. The sparkle effect completely ruins the WUXGA 17" LCD - at least in the one I saw with the LG Philips panel (others may vary, or some may see things differently). Just when you want to enjoy the resolution, the haze and sparkles ruin it.

If you or anyone else doesn't have a problem with it, and aren't particular about it - then that's all fine and well. But, I wouldn't go telling others who recognize and are bummed out about this apparent flaw that they are making too much out of nothing at all simply because you see it that way.

Dell will see a trend and will rectify this issue when they see an excessive amount of 9200's going back.

Well, the 'sparkle' bugged me at first, but after using for some days, I am completely fine with it. I admit that the white background is a bit grayish but overall I love my I9200

Wuxga

Hi All,
I received my i9200 WUXGA for a couple of days now. I heard a lot of comments about the screen quality (after I ordered my laptop ). When I received it I was a bit afraid to open it and discover that I might have to send it back. When I opened it, I was very pleased with the quality of the screen (I had to go back to 96dpi) . The resolution is great, the colors are excellent, and the white is white. It has a slight coating on the LCD, but is not as bad as some had described in this forum. I may have one of a different LCD patch (I live in Sydney Australia). At work we use laptops extensively. My college has a HP 15.4” WSXGA (which have the same coating as the i9200). The i9200 display is much more superior in brightness, sharpness, and colors. I love the laptop, except for the case. I found that the white surrounding makes the unit look cheap. Overall

Dell has had panel problems in the past. There were the early WSXGA Hitachi panels and before that the Samsung WUXGAs that had a burn in effect. Members here were able to compare notes and define which manufacturer's panels created the problem.

This sparkle problem is not minor. I took mine (W4554) to a Dell store and they saw it immediately. The fact that more members are getting panels where this isn't that visible may indicate that there are newer ones without this problem. Hopefully it was a just bad batch. In the past the "squeaky wheels" eventually got their panels replaced with acceptable ones.

I'm at 14 days now, and I think I'll try one exchange to see how my luck is. I was hoping to see some definitive revelations as to what panels are good or bad, but so far it's been somewhat hazy - just like the display.
