M35X-S109 Wireless Connection Problem

Thread Starter
has anyone had any luck getting M35X-S109 to get on the net wirelessly? i have tried d-link cards(2 of them), and they only worked intermittently? i was only able to get on-line for at most 40 seconds before the link drops out.

any brand of laptop network cards are compatible with this laptop?

I have a D-Link DWL-650+ 802.11b card working just fine in this exact model (Best Buy $499 doorbuster). It is probably your settings and not the laptop.

In case you aren't aware you can't put an internal wireless card in this model as the mini-PCI header is not installed. (I looked last night)

Hi Martian,

thanks for your reply. i also bought it on black friday for $499. you know, the d-link cards i have been using came from a starter kit(router+card). first the router was determined by the d-link tech support that it was defective. so i used my old netgear router, but i still had the connection problem. i was using d-link DWL-630, which supports IEEE 802.11g standard. also my old netgear router is compliant with 802.11b. your d-link card supports 802.11b standard.

is it true that if you router is 802.11b compliant, you laptop wireless card has to be 802.11b compliant as well?

Rob

Have you disabled 802.1x Authentication in Windows XP?

should be similar to this:
To disable 802.1x Authentication in Windows XP

1) Click Start, point to Connect To, Click Show all connections, and then double-click your wireless network.
2) On the General tab, click Properties.
3) Click the Wireless Networks tab.
4) Under Preferred Networks, click your home network and then click Properties.
5) Click the Authentication tab, and then clear (un-check) the Enable IEEE 802.1x authentication for this network check box.

hi wildwon,

i figured out how to check whether 802.x authentication is on or not. it is already DISABLED before i checked it. but my network problem remains. wonder if the driver to this d-link GWL-630 is busted or at least incompatible with Windows XP service pak 2.

puzzled.

well, maybe start from the beginning again using the d-link card and d-link router. Power cycle the router and then your notebook without the d-link card in it. Now connect to the router through a wired lan port. Are you able to connect without problems though a wired connection to the router? If you can get into the router, try turing off WEP or encryption for your wireless and turn on SSID. Now disconnect your wired connection and insert your d-link wireless card....and try to connect. You dont need to install any drivers or software for your d-link card, if you did that could be a problem as well. If still a problem then delete your wirelss network card and start fresh.
Other possibility is to try and turn off Windows Wireless Zero Config. at start up and see if that helps.

Hi Wildwon,

thanks for your help! Turning off WEP didn't resolved my wireless prolem. What prompted you to think my connection problem has to do with havng WEP enabled? my old IBM laptop with built-in wireless card works fine with the WEP on. so i can't really blame netgear for its router. Is this an XP problem?

Thanks a lot!

Sometimes wireless cards don\'t always work well together with routers from a different mfg. I would try to keep it all the same mfg if you can, and use a newer model. Sounds like your d-link is new though. You could try redoing your WEP at a different encryption level using a different key or passphrase, and making sure everyting matches in your router and in your notebook wireless setup. Sometimes router firmware upgrades correct problems too. I would not really use wireless unless I could get WEP or some encryption going.
Maybe try a whole different router (Linksys WRT54g or gs) and wireless card just to see if you still have the same problem, if nothing else works.

Reason I mentioned turing off WEP and turing on SSID is to rule those items out as the source of the problem. If you\'re still having disconnects on wireless, then the cause is something else. You could also try a different channel to see if that has any effect.

I had the same issue with the same model laptop and card/router combo. That dlink combo is a POS. I returned it and bought the linksys one, it worked fine. FYI I returned two dlink ones...I would also switch channels, and try moving the access point around.
