I know that replacing the hard drive with with a Hitatchi Travelstar wil improve a lot, but I think the following behaviour is not normal:

When I plug the notebook in AC power the hard drive is constantly making a lot of noise and ventilating. Is that normal? Because it is really annoying.

When I'm on battery power on the other hand, the hard disk only vents and makes noise every 10 minutes or so for a while.
Hi Again,

Does really nobody have advise on this issue? The strage thing is, when I run on batteries even with power management set to "home / office desk" the venting and noise is every ten minutes or so. As soon as I plug in my AC adapter the notebook is making noise constantly without stopping. Am I right if I think that is not how it is supposed to be?

Look at Snorre`s post, and set the configuration like he says. i have 3 hs of battery with ClockGen and the venting is almost off

I think you're supposed to set it to "Portable/Laptop" in order to make sure that the CPU can clock down (lower it's frequenzy).

I have a 3200 though... just FYI.

I know, but why does it get hot and make noise only when on AC power? As soon as I unplug the power (without even changing the power profile) the noise stops.

I'm not sure, but try and check what the power-option is, when it's plugged in, and when it's not plugged in. It might change itself?? Windows works in mysterious ways

Think a little, and test a little.

That's rather odd. But not really. I would assume you have some sort of process that's using the CPU at some number higher than a few percent. Do a CTRL+ALT+DELETE and see what processes you're running in the Task Manager. If anything is steadily using the CPU over 0%, that would cause the fan to go on, even if it is clocked down to save power. So even if your CPU is on power saver (portable/laptop/max batt), then a process that is constantly using the CPU will drain the battery faster. I like to end all processes I'm not using to boost my battery. Then again half life has kicked in thanks to a few trips I had where I couldn't properly charge the battery... so I've had to be real careful on conserving battery life (I get about 2 hr 40 min these days, used to get about 3 hr 30 min *sigh*) I think I'll just buy a new battery soon.

Anyway, yeah, just check your Task Manager because that's where background processes run. I've known some toolbars to be annoying like that, which is why I NEVER use toolbars.

Anyway, good luck.

Turion transplantation?

Hello Snorre and All,
Have any of you tried putting a Turion CPU into the 3400? Can it be done? I'm looking forward to it when they're available if it's possible...
Thanks.

Hitachi Travelstar 60GB 7200 RPM Total failure

Well, it looks like I'm running point on finding bad hardware. Yesterday the new drive I installed in February tanked--no warning, no bad sectors, just total failure. Doesn't even show up as existing in the Ferrari BIOS. I replaced it with the original 80G drive and that works fine. THe drag, of course, is that all the recent work, updates, etc., are gone. If anyone has managed to resuscitate a dead drive, please tell me how. I've tried hooking the dead one up to a drive drawer--no luck. Looking for a miracle here...

All this is normal, I owned a Ferrari 3400 for 5 months before I took it back.

The notebook gets unbearably hot [palm rest area]

Also the fan is on always on and is very LOUD, Mine never shut off.

There were instances the notebook would overheat while gaming and automatically shut off

Of course all this was on "Always On" setting. Their are tweaks that would make these problems less severe, snoore may be able to help you

Asus A8N SLI deluxe

80 GB SATA

What in God's Green Earth are you talking about? Are you trying to run with PowerPlay on and an undervolted CPU? Even then I don't think the Ferrari would score that low. If you don't have PowerPlay on, and didn't mistakenly report that GFX score, there must be a problem!

are you sure to have made the test on AC power? I think you were on battery, or had powerplay on battery power on AC power

ferrari 4005 is a really great notebook! 36 s in superpi 1M! take a look in the topic ferrari 4000 - post your benchmark. I'm not able to understand wht here in italy it makes this formidable score, while in this forum only 47-48s
post #158 of 169
hmmm I cant run 3D 05 .....tells me hardware is not capable must support pixel shader 2 or higher ? errrr so how come everybody else has managed to run it then ?....ive tried everything but still cannot get 3D mark to accept that i have pixel shader 2 wtf do i do next ?
Yeah that happened to me when I had Zeropoint or DNA drivers. Something odd happens with the drivers because of the modded INF file. Installing Omega drivers usually fixes the problem, or basically just reinstall any video driver so that the driver set is full.

You meet the requirements for 05 because you do have PS/VS 2.0.

To think, we'd have no problems if Acer/ATI would release drivers meant for our systems. Dorks they are.
instead I can't run any 3d application with new catalyst!

but it's strange that if I set the frequency to minimal, they run! I don't think it is a temperature problem, because with omega 4.10 everything is correct!
any idea to help me?
