NTFS is superior to FAT32 in almost every way, faster speed and more stable:

Running Linux on F3400

I am thinking of buying 3400 to run linux. I have found a nice hardware report on its younger brother 3200 at http://ferrari.pinguin.tv/ in the The hardware reports section. If anyone can run any of those commands and post the results here I would really appreciate it.

Or alternatevly if anyone familiar with how 3400's hardware differs from 3200's that would be usefull too.

Yes you can use the same layout on the laptops HD as you do on regular PC. Your only constraint is the size of laptop HD.

Also here are some words on FAT vs. NTFS.

Here at work we used to make C: drive FAT drive and the D: drive NTFS. This is because if windows died it was much easier to boot and fix a system file on FAT partition. However, now that there is a way to build a rescue disk based on Windows XP we make both partitions NTFS as it is more efficient and more feautre full than FAT.

Also we generally take 5GB for the C: (system) and the rest of HD for the D: (data). Then Windows goes on C: and any application where you can change the installation path goes to D:.

The 5GB comes from expirience. We started with FAT and it is was 2GB (Limit of a FAT partition) but that was not enough the system drive would run out of space after couple of service packs form MS. Then we switched to 4GB NTFS it was barely enough leaving only 200-300MB free space after a while. After this 5GB NTFS, seems to leave enough free space for us not to worry nor waiste too much of it.

P.S. This is also how I partition HDs on PC for family/relatives when installing XP. Work very well for me.

CPU upgrade?

Thanks for the excellent review and information. I agree that the F3400 rocks. But ever fixed on faster..., have any of you taken the beast apart yet? Is the amd 64 mobile replaceable? Can we swap in the new 3400 chip? heh heh heh

The only difference between the 3400 & 3200 are the CPU's and the port-replication port, everything else are 100% identical.

Regarding Linux & Acer Ferrari 3200/3400, see also this report:

I've taken a look inside and the CPU is definately replacable, even though doing so would void the warrenty. However, I wouldn't recommend replacing it with anything else than a low-power Mobile Athlon 64 (35W TDP) part. Hopefully, the low-power Mobile Athlon 64 "Lancaster" (25W TDP) coming next year will be compatible as I'm planing to upgrade then

I read do to the different processor running at 90nm and the port replication it has a different motherdoard aswell, so not strictly identical

Just got myself the Ferrari 3400 and have some issues which I hope you guys can help me with.

1. Why won't the CPU throttle down? I've got it set on Portable/Laptop in the Power Schemes and the CPU speed is a constant 2.0Ghz even when the dashboard shows very low CPU utilisation.

2. I seem to be getting very very low scores for 3DMark03(340). Its only 3016 and 324 for the CPU!

Any and all help would be appreaciated!

Oh yeah, is there any software out there that can determine HDD RPM?

++Edit++
Sorted out problem 2 after installing the Omega Radeon divers. The Hyperion drivers didn't do much though...

Try the Max Battery power scheme instead then.

The RPM of the HDD in the Acer Ferrari 3400 is 4200. I don't know of any software that can determine the RPM, but you can use HD Tach 3 to test the speed of your HDD:

Merry Yule!

Will give the Max Battery scheme a try. Thanks!

Problems solved! I had to reinstall the CPU drivers again for it to work.

Thanks for the help!
