Maintenance question regarding fan

Before asking let me just say that I love my 6810 and really appreciate everything I learn by lurking around here and reading the posts. I enjoy my laptop so much in fact that I keep putting off the desire to send it in on the hinges because I'm worried about the withdrawl that is inevitable while it is gone.

Anyway, does anyone use compressed air to blow out the intake / exhaust for the fan. I'm assuming the laptop is off. I'm sorry if this sounds dumb but I have to use my laptop in a generally dusty environment and it is on constantly. Whenever i use air to blow dust off the screen or cookie crumbs from under the keys I am tempted to blow out the poor vents to keep it running cooler.

If it is ok to do this, which grating is the intake? Seems like the left side as you look at it.

Thanks again for all the info.

I believe the left side and the top left are both intakes, but not sure. I typically at least once a week blow out both those vents first, as well as the exhaust vent on the rear. I ocassionally even blow out the vents on the bottom.

I have found that whenever working on a customers desktop system who smokes in their house, the dust does not BLOW off. You actually need to brush it off. So whatever you do, do not smoke, and especially near the computer.

I always have a can of air duster and blow the vents out and the keyboard regularly. If it gets bad then I use my air compressor.

Thanks

Thanks to both of you for your response.
Fortunately smoking isn't an issue
Now....where is my can of air? Hopefully my son didn't use it to pretend his army men were in a hurricane again.

Thanks again

As long as you make sure your air can is right side up... I'm not sure what the cold liquid is that comes out when its upside down, but I don't think it's good for electronics (at least until it dries)

Just FYI, the liquid that comes out of those cans is truthfully R-134a refrigerant, the stuff your cars A/C takes if it was built after 1994.

No joke!! You also do NOT under any circumstances want to inhale mass quanities of it, especially by putting mouth on straw. It can kill without warning.

To the question, the owners manual says NO, [page76] : "DO NOT ATEMPT TO CLEAN DUST FROM INSIDE YOUR NOTEBOOOK". I suspect you'll end up jambing up dust in the corners over time..

Which would you rather have? Some stray dust on the inside of the notebook or dust clogging the extremely important flow paths?
