VMWare is nice but 99% of people do not use it for what it was meant for which is cross-platform development and testing.
That puts me in the minority for what I have used VMWare for so far. I have been using it for testing Windows hardening configurations, incident response tools, Windows rootkits, and to ensure that the documentation I write actually works correctly. I have installed Redhat 7.1, FreeBSD 4.1, and OpenBSD 3.0. These don't get much use. Mostly, I use them to sniff traffic on a virtual network, again for testing purposes.
I have not done any real software development for three years, and I no immediate plans to resume it.
I also use it as a security tool. I do very little web surfing from the host OS. I do that from a virtual machine that is very easily recreated.
