3790 sound: low-tech high-result solution and CHEEP.

Hi, fellow 3790 users. After a month of frustration with the 3790's sound on an otherwise great machine - especially NYC-DC bus rides unable to hear a damn thing - I went looking around for a solution. Sound cards and fancy external amplifiers - like Creative's - seemed like an option, but either expensive or not totally mobile.

So I bought this thing called a Boostaroo, about $25 from ThinkGeek.com. It takes two AA batteries, and is not much bigger than that, has one switch - on or off, no volume control - and three headphone jacks with no loss of sound between them like regular splitters. The box says 40% sound increase and that's about right. I'm very pleased with it - works well with external speakers, though if you're using headphones its best to have a pair with their own volume control. Cheap and simple...I think it's an excellent solution.

Anyway, that's my contribution to the 3790 world.

cheep cheep... the birds are out!

But this thing just amplifies the sound, it doesn't enhance it in any way.

When I had my 3790 I was let way down by the quality of the sound as well as the output.

i tried this thing about a year or so ago and was not very impressed. yes it increases the volume but the sound quality wasnt that great. the sound of my toshiba tecra latop wasnt great to begin with and it got slightly worse using the increased volume of the boostaroo. anyway, if a bit of degraded sound doesnt bother you too much for a cheap boost in volume and outputs, then i'd go for it. btw, i have the echo indigo now and yeah it costs more but for me it was worth it.

I just received my 3790 yesterday and so far I have no problem at all with the quality of the sound, but I can see why people would complain about the volume. But I think the quality is very good. So maybe the amplifier solution would be a good route to go for me. I'll have to use it more with headphones and see if the low volume drives me batty.

quality

Yeah, personally, I have very high standards for audio, and with the volume from the boostaroo I now have few complaints. I've been playing a bunch of games lately, and the directional sound coming out of the laptop is great - good ambience, and people sneaking up on me really sound like they're sneaking up on me. Mind you, it's been awhile since I've played these games, so my standards are not as excruciating as a true freak's. If I had the money for the Indigo, sure I'd buy that, but for $130 less, the boostaroo sure delivers a lot.

I have no speaker os bass vibration problems whatsoever. And when I use the "Small Speakers" Equalizer preset in iTunes I find the quality of sound to be close to that of my desktop 2.1 speaker system. Not nearly as loud, but I have no problems with the quality. In fact, I think the quality of the 3790's sound (not volume!) without headphones or external speakers is better than that of all the laptops I have owned in the past (including my Toshiba Satellite, Apple iBook, Sony VAIO, and NEC Versa).

Maybe you've just got a defective unit. Or perhaps there's a screw loose somewhere causing the vibration noise. I'd give your laptop a thurough inspection to make sure that there are no loose particles causing this vibration you speak of. I hope there is a loose screw because I have faith in the 3790s speakers and hope you can hear it too. Best of luck!

My 8890 had really low volume too. If you haven't already, go into PowerDVD's Audio configuration and go into the Advanced settings. Then in the Misc tab, select "Noisy Environment" - really helped me a lot.
