this is your post last week
|Just a quick update, I spoke with support yesterday. The person confirmed he had heard of this issue before, and would check with a Product manager (not sure if Product manager was his exact words). The said they were out tomorrow, so it would be next week. It's the Holidays, so I'll update when I hear back. He confirmed there is definately no firmware for this drive, and that if the DVD drive needs replacing, they will send out the drive and I do not have to RMA the Laptop (Good Deal).
Anyways, just thought I would update in case anyone has similar issues. As far as their techinical support, I am pretty pleased, this is my first use of their support. They did not respond to my e-mail, so a day and a half later, I sent in a call request. They responded within an hour. So I would probably recommend the call request option and just type in all of the other info. I was also very pleased that they did not treat me like a computer idiot, as a lot of the companies I have dealt with in the past. Possibly because I copied all of the info in this thread.
Since, I have used yet a third brand of 4x media, it worked, so I am somewhat convinced that this drive will not handle 8x media. The third type was Sony. So Sony dvd-r 4x, TDK dvd-r 4x and Fujifilm dvd+r 4x all worked. TDK dvd-r 8x and Fijifilm dvd+r 8x did not.
didn't they said you can replace the drive if it's the problem? what happen between last week till today?
i don't think they can ok you on a Sony firmware fix or provide you a firmware that don't exist from pioneer. since if you want to do 3rd party firmware fix you are on your own.www.cdrinfo.com
are two site that offers quite alot of information or fixes that are not official. there are even hack firmwares that unlocks the region lock or burn higher speed then the media is rated for. but all these are not official since unlocking the region lock would mean legal issues.
if sager were to ok any home fix, the the chain of warranty between each vendor will just break apart, and all the legal issue attached to it.
and it seems that there is nothing wrong with your drive, it just won't support new media that is made for newer drive.
this happened to me two times, my pioneer A03 desktop drive will not use any of the new 4X DVD-R unless i update my firmware with on of the home made firmware found on cdrinfo.com, and with that fix most of the 2X media i buy when they are on special low price deals won't work. at one point the A03 are not even allowed to be used with any media over 2x rating as it will burn the drive or something. i can no longer find the notice on pioneerusa.com but it's on sony.com

|Sony has been informed by one of our DVD drive suppliers (Pioneer) that the DVR-103 and DVR-104 model DVD-RW drives, which are installed in some VAIO desktop computers, may not recognize the new "High Speed Write" DVD media format. Furthermore, there is a possibility that the drive or media will be damaged if the computer is operated with the new media inserted. It is only blank high-speed write media that may cause damage to the drive or the media. Content already written on new media may be played back on the drives without risk of damage.
same deal with my Sony Dru-510. one firmware version works fine with most 4x media but not 8x while other works well with 8x but not 4x. this happens from what i gather is that firmware has supported media type / brand list in them but has it's limit with size, so they just can't include every media type / brand out on the market, to add new ones old ones have to be removed.
oh and with the sony official firmwares are even worst any non officialy supported media on their supported media list, burned at 1x or 2x max even the drive is a 4x drive and the media is rated 4x. had to use home fix hacked firmeware to get around it. and when the drive fail their RMA returned the drive to me unfixed due to not their official firmware, the drive has been tempered with warranty void.
so can you give us more detail on how sager isn't honoring your warranty? as your drive seem to be working fine, just not with newer media 8x media. but i guess you can still burn fine at 2x using newer 4x medias.
