DT: Thoughts about my Area-51

So after having the computer for a couple of days now, I want to give a mini-review:

The central theme to the review is about HUGE.

First things first, everything about this computer is huge! Starting with the box, its taller than my kids! I was a bit surprised as I was expecting two boxes, one for the tower and one for the accessories but I guess they managed to put it all in one box. After struggling to get a handle on it and get it upstairs to the office, the fun started. When the tower was pulled out, I was quite shocked to see how big it really is. Pictures don't tell the story as to the size and the beauty of it. It is a shiny black that shows fingerprints very easily so it needs to be handled with care.

I was a bit hesitant when I was deciding about shelling premium price for a matching keyboard and mouse but after taking them out of the box and putting the whole thing together, I am glad I did. They match perfectly! The cable management piece is worth the $10. It complements the tower very well.

The documentation that comes with it good. I read that they used put the stuff in a binder and I wish they continued that. However, I like the special account card that came with the manual.

It took me a couple of minutes to figure out how to pull the side cover to get to the unlocking mechanism. Only after I pried it open, did I realize that I could have pushed it gently to unspring the mechanism. Oh well, at least I didn't break it.

Upon removing the side panel, I was beyond impressed! They did an awesome job at routing and hiding all the cables. First thing I noticed was the HUGE exhaust fan!! Second thing I noticed was the HUGE CPU fan. In the documentation was a diagram of the motherboard and it was interesting to see how things were laid out.

I can't believe how much space there is inside for upgrading and adding components. I can't imagine ever running out of places to add things. I was bummed though when I found out I couldn't install another non-SATA hard drive since there is only a primary IDE and they are both being used by both my optical drives. The 120GB HD I got an awesome deal for would have to be returned for a SATA drive. I know I could have bought a card or connector but it isn't worth it to me right now.

So after admiring the insides, it was time to close it up and power this baby up!

One major dissapointment was the 8 in 1 media reader. I got it because it had a firewire connection up front that I could use to connect and charge my iPod. However, the port is a 4-pin non-powered connection and not the 6-pin. I should have confirmed when I ordered it but oh well. Now I know...

The moment of truth was when I pressed the On button and the Alienware logo appeared on my new Dell 1905 19" monitor. How sweet is the logo!! After setting up Windows I spent a good amount of time just playing around. The speed is amazing. Now I am coming from a 5-year old PIII 450 Dell laptop and there is NO comparison. None!!!

First thing I noticed upon powering up is that the exhaust fan is LOUD. I can't believe that the fan isn't adjustable so I went onto Intel's site and downloaded their Desktop Control Center. This is a cool app that allows one to monitor and control how various motherboard parameters. I slowed the exhaust fan from about 2200 RPM to 1800 RPM and it made a HUGE difference. I constantly monitored the temps and ran some intensive apps and saw that reducing the RPMs by 500 is having no effect on the CPU temps.

I am not a big gamer so I haven't played any games yet, but I can't wait to go out and get HL2 and really see what this mosnter can do! I also will download 3DMark 2005 this weekend so I'll see what the number is with all of my software installed.

My PC Information coming out of the factory showed a 3DMark Score: 1,542.00 3DMarks and CPU Score: 4,861.00 CPUMarks.

Anyone on the fence about buying should go and buy one. The private Alienware forums and this one are excellent resources. I called customer service once for my hard drive dillemma and got connected in 2 minutes and the tech knew everything about my config and was awesome.

Great company with an AWESOME product!!!

The Area 51 isn't referred to as the Alienware Flagship for nothing. Nice initial review G. When you get some games fired up let us know how those temps hold out.
